Input Requested - removing Cali Stone tank
« on: October 31, 2021, 01:16:04 PM »
Just starting a bunch of work on the new to me Stone.  I’m going to remove the tank to change the air filter and also inspect the breather hoses under there to make sure they are not clogged and/or cracked/dry rotted.  Silly question first.  It’s been years upon years since I pulled an 1100 tank and I don’t recall the ones I previously owned (all 4 of them!) as having this setup.  Can someone give some advice here and answer some dumb questions?  Here are two connections I see immediately that I’m unsure about per se.  What are these two.  Neither of them look like a quick connect so do I have to drain the tank first?

The one on the right is a manual shutoff for the fuel, twist that knurled knob clockwise to the stop, remove hose that attaches at the back side of the valve. The item on the left is a fuel level sensor, there will be a quick connect plug a short distance inboard from the mounted sensor found when the tank is released from the frame with bolt at rear and lifted slightly from the rear. On reassembling use caution to make sure you plug the sensor into the correct cable, it may be marked or it may have a yellow band. The risk is that this bike started life with and electric petcock that ran on 12v with ground, the sensor does not and you can burn it out. There is also a return hose attached at the front of the tank in the tunnel, you may have to remove one or both of the trim panels attached to the headstock, the nut on the hose is 19mm.There may also be small hoses pushed onto fittings on the bottom of the tank under the fuel cap area, remove those and slide tank back while lifting and Robert is your Mother's brother.

I cannot remember a 2003 Stone withe hydraulic lifters and a fuel pump and filter outside the tank, in which case removal is different. I think I would be checking the build date on the VIN tag on the headstock. Interesting regardless and I may be way off base.

Possibly an engine swap, do engine and frame numbers match??

In the front of the tank there should be a fuel return hose. Follow previous instructions then slide the tank back and up a bit. You'll see the hose. I think you need a 17mm to loosen the nut. There may also be a smaller hose with a hose clamp next to it, don't remember for sure.

It’s an odd one.  I have another thread on here about that.  It’s an ‘03 and has the seat to match and the hydro recall done (I checked under the hood), except it looks like an ‘02 with wrinkle engine paint.   I’ll double check vin.  Where is the vin on the engine?

And much thanks on the earlier advice on the tank removal.

On the left down low just above the oil pan and behind and above side stand bracket. The hydraulic engine is a great engine and a great substitute if the original has gone south. I believe the computers were programmed differently but don't actually remember or know how to tell.

This is a link to the parts pdf. for 2002 - 2003

https://www.guzzitek.org/parts_list/gb/1100/

There are others there as well. The information there led to my comments about your bike and the confusion over what model year. Have a look around the guzzitek.org website there is much to be gained from proper information about these bikes.
