Oil leak found
« on: November 04, 2021, 09:19:45 PM »
After a complete build of my G5 and crabbing the frame again because I installed the ring gear backwards, I had to crab it yet again to figure out why gearbox oil was leaking from the flywheel/clutch housing.  It turns out that the ID of the front gearbox oil seal was a tiny bit larger than the clutch hub.  Luckily I had in my parts collection the correct seal for installation. I think maybe I had installed a front engine oil seal by mistake.  Crabbing  the frame has gotten much faster and less mysterious, and I installed sturdy ring bolts in the ceiling to hold everything.

I was always amazed how few tools were left on the floor and how quickly that could happen..

Of course being pissed off that it’s leaking after all that work makes things go faster

I think i did 3 in a row in one weekend w a convert gearbox…I forget why

Support the motor
Remove front wheel -1 axle nut
Mufflers -4 bolts
1 rear Axle
Rear wheel w drive- 4nuts
Swingarm out…4 shock mounts and 2 stub axles
Loosen front engine mounts
Undo the rear frame rails
Lift her arse
Pull off trans…8-10 nuts?

With just a handful of tools it’s disassembled and bleeding on the floor

On the flipside …if the exhaust is rusted together it might two days just to get that apart

I'm just quoting from some parts and info I have for the LM 1000, so it could be different but the timing chest seal is 38x28x7 and the clutch hub seal 47x35x7.

Unless it's an older hub as I recall earlier hubs were different.

You don't happen to know what seal you removed and what you replaced it with, just idle curiosity?

We've all been there though, my "stupid shit wot I done" account is a very long one indeed

Glad it's all sorted

John

It may be that the new clutch hub in the kit I bought from MG Cycle has a slightly smaller OD. I had a seal selection with the kit and the right seal was in there. I think I pulled the wrong seal from my rebuild oil seal kit. The ODs are the same but the ID of the right seal is about 2 mm smaller. I should have checked against the clutch hub when installing. Enough difference to push gearbox one into the bell housing but not enough to foul the clutch plates.
