V50II Saga Continues

I sold the V50II on BaT a month or so ago.  The price wasn’t great, $3,499, but oh well.  The buyer wired the funds immediately and had it picked up a week or two later for shipment across the country to California.  He called me the other day when he got it saying he didn’t get the key. After a few minutes in the phone we figured out that he was looking at the gas cap and the knob key was in the switch. An hour or so later he called back, pretty angry, saying that the clutch was slipping so badly that it wouldn’t ride uphill. I really liked the buyer, who was a tech company owner who collects sports cars but is not really a motorcycle guy.  The clutch has never slipped and I had gone through it in the refresh and ridden about a thousand miles before selling the bike, including two wonderful days of Vermont mountain strafing last summer. But anything is possible.

I told the buyer that I will buy it back and cover the shipping back home, provided that I get the title back unmarked and no one opens up or damages the bike. He is going to have a local BMW tech look at it and let me know.  I get the sense that the purchase was impulsive and he may just want to unwind it.  He just bought another sports car and spent more time talking about that.

I kind of feel like one of my kids called from summer camp and wants to come home.  I’ll keep everyone posted.

When you buy a used vehicle private sale you get it as-is, unless you gave the buyer some written warranty. He got it and didn't like it? Buyer's remorse? Not really your problem.

No warranty Larry, and you are absolutely right.  I didn’t like the sale price though and am switching law firms right now and don’t need an internet range war or the bad karma. I’d rather eat a few hundred dollars and keep my world balanced.

DO NOT buy that bike back and eat the shipping.  You know the bike is fine.

I wonder how often stuff like that happens when someone buys  a shiny old bike without a test ride.I would tell the guy to have it looked at by a local guy  and get an estimate to adjust the clutch or teach the guy how to operate a motorcycle.Maybe you could work  something out from there,or you fly out,stay at his McMansion,and fix it.

When I sale any type of Motor vehicle I make it complete clear that it’s yours when you hand me the money and I hand you the title. Therefore feel free to check it out to your satisfaction.
I’ve never had any issues that way.

Where in California? Have him take it to Mark at Moto Guzzi Classics to be checked out. I would not buy it back.

I told him I want to talk with his mechanic before deciding what to do.  He doesn’t seem overly concerned.  If his tech says that adjustment of the lever, cable or clutch arm don’t solve any problems, I will take it back.  It’s a very sweet bike.  I don’t get hung up on principle and I do think it’s one of the nicer examples out there.  If someone up there wants it back in my garage, I’m fine with that. And I have all of you to back me up in a virtual bar fight.

Cable probably got tugged in transit and the sheath is hung up on one end or the other. Probably something that simple. Hope it gets resolved easily. My daughter  owns a v50II and personally, I  would have a hard time seeing it go. Very fun bikes.
