front wheel bearing removal
« on: February 22, 2022, 09:16:57 PM »
My first MG, a T3, that I am going through, arriving at the front wheel, the bearings are shot.
So, the question is, how to get them out? The parts diagram shows the disc-spacer as a separate part. Is this pressed on or is it "fixed" because of age? Would it be the route to go by removing the spacer and then do the bearings? Or just get an inside puller and heat?

I started with the bore and head and while waiting for those parts, I am moving forward to the forks and wheel as I mentioned with the next step the fork seals.

thanks in advance for any and all suggestions. Spring is coming.......soon.. ....

More head scratching to come......

The spacer between the bearings just floats, counting on the correct clearance to keep it in place. Too long and the bearings aren’t seated in the bore. Too short and they are in a bind. A long punch and you can move the spacer enough to catch the edge of the bearing and give it a whack. Then across and evenly pound it out. A heat gun on the outside of the bearing housing will expand the aluminum more than the steel bearing. I usually only use the heat on installation but sometimes if they are stuck, I’ll heat it

I usually use a blind bearing (hammer) puller-  they can be pretty well stuck in there!  Soak it with penetrating oil for 2-3 days.
The last time I had to take one out, it was stuck tight.  I made a tool that had knife-edge lip on it (fit in the small space between the bearing and the spacer), with a slot across.  Then, I had to hammer in a chisel into the slot to expand the tool so the knife-edge wedged the bearing away from the spacer.  After that-  continued with the hammer to knock out the bearing.  The chisel in the slot ensured that the bearing removal tool stayed behind bearing.

Motion Pro make a specific tool for this.  Easy to make something similar with a lathe and mill.

the bearing / disc carriers are through bolted in the front hub,

you don't need a blind beraing puller for this system, just flip the bearing carrier over and lnock out the old bearing. Warm the carrier up to 300F in an oven abnd the bearings will drop right in

here is a nice complete bearing, bearing retainer, axle and bolt kit if you want to go whole hog

A long drift will usually do it.  Put it through one side to the inside race of the far bearing.  If you can drive it out a little bit you should be able to push the spacer to the side and get a better purchase on the bearing. Once one side is out you can remove the spacer and the other bearing is cake. You won’t be reusing the bearings so no need to be gentle.  Check out Thisoldtractor for bearing specs and order a few.  Theoretically you can also remove the disc bolts and bearing carriers from the wheels and then remove the bearings from the carriers, but that is more work.
