96 Cali 1100i fuse and windshield
« on: February 15, 2022, 01:56:15 PM »
Anyone know what size fuse the headlight circuit should be ? Mine has a 10 amp fuse in it now and keeps blowing. This bike is new to me. I have the manual but I can’t find the info in it.
Also, what is a good replacement windshield for this bike ?
Thanks

Ten amp is the correct fuse size.

If it is continuing to blow, then you might have an intermittent short circuit, or the wrong wattage bulb fitted.  You might want to consider a LED headlight, much more light with less demand on the battery and fuses.

Ok
Thanks
The PO wires in a phone charger so maybe I’ll disconnect that and see if it quits blowing the fuse.

You need to figure this out before riding, the schematic shows the Voltage regulator senses the Voltage downstream of the headlight relay (42)
Its possible the battery is not charging with a blown fuse.

When looking for an intermittent short trick I use is to replace the fuse with an old headlight bulb with a couple of wires attached, the bulb will be able to power most circuits at partial brightness but when you get a short it will flash at full on.
Unfortunately there's a lot of wiring associated with the headlight.
It shows that the tach is powered from that fuse, that could be handy if its still associated with the fuse, an early warning.
Also the front brake switch (16), the wiring to the brake-light shorted perhaps
You have several multi pin plugs there, that might help isolate the fault.

Good luck.

That is interesting because yesterday when I rode it the alternator light was on and stayed on for what I thought was longer than it should be. Also, it looks to have a newer regulator. Just before I got the bike my friend , who had the bike (since passed ) had attached a sidecar and wired it up. I am going to disconnect that and ride it today and see if that is where the problem might be.

If you tap into a circuit make sure you use that lead for the signal to a relay for full power..
I have mounted National Cycle Plexstar 3 and 2's on Cali's of that vintage, nice airflow.

I second the Plexistar, works well on my '96.

When I go to the National cycle website it tells me that the plexistar 3 won’t fit a 96 California. Is there some modification that needs to occur ?

I also have a more pressing issue. My plugs are really sooty and I thought it could possibly be the sensors. I pulled the  TPS and cleaned it off  ( not bad ) I didn’t test. I replaced the temperature sensor in the valve cover and I pulled the other sensor (in front of left cylinder ) and cleaned. They are still sooty. This bike has 113,000 miles on it but still runs really strong and doesn’t seem to smoke but something is off. I guess it could also need valve guides . I need to do a leak down test also I guess. I was hoping for a quick fix. Too much fuel or too much wear ?

Ok
I replaced the air filter and cleaned off the air temperature sensor and it seems to have helped. There was dust and dirt on the sensor. I had blown off the filter a while back. The plugs look much better. Not as sooty. I have a hard time believing the problem could have been caused by just dirt on the sensor but ? Either way Yippeeeee !

Kthomas, where did you find an air temperature sensor at? I've been pining for one for my '99 Bassa.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.
