Shortening a VSTROM 1000
« on: February 23, 2022, 07:17:46 AM »
Buy a motorcycle that's too tall for you.  This is not a recent purchase.......... well, not like I bought it THIS week.      :bike-037:

Shorten it a bit

Drag out the hacksaw because you're gonna need to shorten the side stand, while you're at it.

No one was more surprised than me to see this fit up like this.

Then a bit of welding and nothing but the best Rustoleum gloss black spray paint.
Re-install the side stand, and put the cut-off piece with the rest of your collection

Did you slide the forks up the same amount that you lowered the rear?

If not, did you notice any affect of changing the rake and trail by only lowering the rear?

I lowered the rear about an inch or a fuzz more and slid the front fork tubes up into the triple trees an inch.  Put a Sargent "low" seat on it, but it really approximates the height of the factory seat.  Much more comfortable, though.

After lowering it - the bike sat "OK" on level ground, but you had to be careful where you parked it.  So, cut an inch and a quarter section out of the side stand.  THAT makes me more happy.

Fun bikes but a bit on the high side so a lowering link is your friend.
I had a 650 and the OEM low seat was enought thankfully.
What year is she?
Congrats!

It's a 2018 that was two model years leftover.  The official story is that it was somehow hiding in the warehouse.  Still, they were very generous with the discount.  Less $$$ than the 650 that I was looking at.  The 1000 is something like 35 pounds heavier than the 650, so I figured that wasn't such a big deal.

You’ll like it better than the 650 I’ll wager.

That was a real head scratcher, looking at all the specs.  In the end, I figured that the liter version would be happier on the interstate runs than the 650.

Given the option I choose the larger engine. The only time I remember regretting it was when I bought a Cal instead of a Centauro because it had a larger engine. It turned out ok because I ran the Cal for well over a hunnerd K after I hopped it up. With the higher output and smaller size, the Centauro would have needed more attention. You chose well!
