CARC oil won't fit...

I'm changing the final drive and transmission oil on my 2017 Stelvio - first time time doing these myself.

The Manual says the capacity for the final drive is 380cc (same as 380ml).

I drained the oil, but did not measure it on the way out.

I measured 380 ml into a cup. But on refill I still had 100ml left in the cup when it topped off at the filler. I rotated the rear wheel a bit to move the fluid, but it still settled at the threads.

So... are you supposed to fill it while it's on the sidestand or what?

FYI - I only rode it around the block a couple time to warm up the engine oil, so the final drive probably didn't get too warm.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the 380 was a typo.  Maybe check some other references to verify the amount?  I always fill oil with the bike vertical and level - center stand.  Adding oil (or any fluid for that matter) with the bike in any other position gives you a false level reading.

Did you let the old oil drain out for a few minutes?  Though if you only let it drain for two or three seconds after most ran out, I would still doubt that there was 100ml still in the final drive.

Edit:  I just looked this up and 850-T's take 360 cc's, so it sounds like your number is in the ballpark.  How did you measure your 380 CC's?  Did you use a RatioRite or a graduated cylinder?  Are you measuring properly?

I see 380cc listed in the owners manual. Aren’t you supposed to drive for like 10 miles before draining the fluids?

Oil was definitely not up to full operating temperature... and it sure didn't seem like much oil came out. I did not turn the wheel while it was draining. But I waited a good 15 minutes or so - until it was not even dripping anymore.

Just to confirm - the oil level should be up to the bottom of the thread on the final drive, right?

FWIW - my 500ml of transmission oil fit just fine.

My Norge is quoted @ 400 ml but I have always just filled it to the top of the hole.
Never had an issue.

I don't know the CARC system, but isn't there a level plug, as already said get bike level and fill slowly until fluid comes out the level plug.

If you can't get the bike out on a short ride to heat the bevel box, what I do is heat it gently with a hot air gun until it's warm then spin the rear wheel, works well for the earlier bikes I have

I have noticed CARC oil ALL comes out if you spin the back wheel a few turns as you drain it. Same as you fill it. Take fill plug out 1st then drain plug. Some 380cc fits others not. I usually put in 350cc. Turning back wheel gets the air that's captivated in area out.
I can't say how the air gets trapped but moving wheel works.

You can’t get more than about 300ml in.   Just fill to the drain and put the plugs back in.  Ride for 30-50 miles , burp it, and forget it!

The recommended lubricant is so thick and viscous that it clings to the surfaces really well especially when cool or cold.  Not sure of your weather but it really helps to warm it up if doing the maintainence in the winter months.

Just a thought.....if you drain it with the bike on the side stand all the oil may not drain out. I always move the bike to vertical and a bit more will come out. You did not mention it in your post but that is all I got.

Thanks everybody.  I did not spin the wheel during draining, but I did spin it while filling and that "burped" it to allow a bit more oil in. All set now, took a spin from sea level to 5000 feet on Mount Palomar - still snow up there.

Stopped by the fruit and garden stands on the way home. Today's haul:
Navel oranges
Tangerines
Haas avocados
Fresh ginger
Pecans in the shell
Roma tomatoes
Yellow and red onions
Cucumber
Broccoli
Strawberries
Romaine and green-leafy lettuce

Aren't saddlebags great? And the Stelvio bags have great seals. When I drop down from Mount Palomar to the fruit stands in the valley, it's hard to open the lids because they vacuum seal on the way down.

My V85 luggage did that too.
I ended up boring a 1/16” hole in the bottom of all three...
That fixed it..

Agreed. It's such a nimble bike for its size, yet so versatile. Too bad they didn't sell super well. But that worked out for me as I got the last model year deeply discounted - but still new.
