Torn meniscus - Not me, my wife
« on: May 31, 2022, 04:39:48 AM »
Hello all -

I have the internet at my fingertips, but her being four days post surgery it occurs to me to ask for your collective wisdom.

Pain meds and chilling the knee have got her past the cusp, now we move on to the next stage.

Any and all counsel appreciated -

Norman aka normzone

My own experience is it takes a long time to heal and light shoes with gel arch supports make a huge difference.

Physical Therapy.... Stretching, strengthening, Do it ALL. Focus on as much NORMAL step walking as possible. Meaning take normal natural steps. Many people short step, favor the bad leg, and end up with permanent gimp. I had 5 Meniscus tears and 3 ACL surgeries between 1984 and 2019. Always returned back to normal following that advice from my DR. Went back to full normal life, and Marathon running.

I had to have total hip replacement in 2020 and the surgeon said that though my knee was stable and I wasn't in much pain, that all the surgeries and wear resulted in abnormal movement and would compromise the fake hip. So, I had the knee done 6 months later.

My wife had ACL and Miniscus surgery 30 years ago, and she is still doing fine, and running marathons at 60. Wishing a full recovery!

She do the scope surgery?

My tear was acute and I know when/how I did it.  If she did it over time then could be she needs someone to help her identify what is causing the damage to her knee.  PT is great although there are young trainers at our gym that have kinesiology degrees and they are great at identifying poor movement (especially mine!).

Stretch!  Also, get a foam roller and leave it by her favorite sitting place.  YouTube can show you which stretches/rolls are best. Also, get a Lacrosse ball and have her smash the bottom of her feet daily.  Good feet help everything above!

I tore mine standing up from an airline seat.  :-(  Took me months to convince them to let me see an ortho.  Diagnosed immediately.  Surgery and I was back on my bicycle in just over two weeks.  18 months now and you'd never know anything happened.

Thanks all for your responses.

Yes, she did the scope surgery, and her tear was acute - she knows when she did it, and it is a work related injury.

It's day five since the surgery, and while she won't be passing any drug tests anytime soon she is doing as well as expected.

However I have acquired a worried and sleepless look.

I had one a couple years ago.  Fifteen minute minimally invasive surgery, fast rehab.  Was back in the gym two weeks after surgery.
Between the injury and the surgery, it hurt and was noticeably swollen, but not so much that I couldn't function reasonably well.
