500 GB hard drive failed ... NOW FIXED
« on: September 05, 2022, 02:58:20 PM »
Hi
The hard drive on our satellite box has died.

The drive is a 500GB Toshiba  MQ01ABD050V 2.5 inch

Are all hard drives of this type interchangeable or do I need to match the exact model number

Cheers

Same size (physically)  and same plug in connection of any brand should work fine.
Do you have a Microcenter or some computer store nearby? Bring the old one in if you can and ask someone so you know for sure.

I feel for ya.

I had a HD fail in my satellite receiver, which caused me to lose several recordings I really wanted to keep, including the series Raines and Rubicon, neither of which are available on DVD.

As others have said, a new drive should be plug and play if it is the same type/pins, etc.  I have been using the Cloud as a backup, 1TB with onedrive and all the MS programs with updates and security for a reasonable yearly fee. Once all is backed up you can access from anywhere, download for offline use, etc. Mostly set and forget.

SSD compatible drive, much faster with no moving part.

The problem you might face would be if the manufacturer used the old hard drive for their operating system.
If the HD was used only for storage you should be good to go.

If it doesn't work for the Toshiba, it will work  be a great upgrade for a laptop computer.

Probably zero speed advantage to installing a faster disk locked into that satellite box.
You should be able to drop about any disk in there.

I have to wonder if they need a special format though. The box may not do the initial format. I'm sure a Google of the satellite box number will tell you if people have done it.

That's the one issue Wayne, but for £14 for the drive as opposed to £200 for a new box I think I'll give it a go!
