Mapping definitely makes a difference!!
« on: October 16, 2022, 04:14:00 PM »
My 2002 Stone has never ran the way I felt like it should run, especially when I compared it to my 2004 EV or the Calvin. The 1400 is not even in the same category.
The best way to explain how it felt was that when I really wanted to wind it out to near redline, it felt like I had a 300lb passenger, it would never hit the power band like my EV of Calvin did.
I decided something just was not right with the mapping. A couple weeks ago Antmanbee went through it and got everything to spec so I concluded it must be in the mapping.
I had gotten a couple maps from Mr Beetle in the past and he had worked with me until perfection was obtained on the Calvin so I contacted him and requested him to take a look at the map which was in the bike now, which he agreed to do.
A couple days later he sent Wife an updated map for the Stone.
After uploading the map to the Stone, I took it out for a test run.
Wow is all I could think and say!!!!
It was like the difference as day and night!
The acceleration was unreal and when it hit the l, now acquired power band, it felt like a turbo kicked in, all the way to redline!
I simply could not believe the difference the upgraded map made.

Im not attempting to promote anyone’s business here, just sharing my pleasant experience with the map I now have. Im sure there are other places and people who can accomplish the same results. Im just attempting to acknowledge that a good map makes all the difference in the world with these bikes.
I also have learned that if something doesn’t feel right with your motorcycle, then it’s probably not and after you check and be sure the basic tuning is correct then get a qualified tech or accomplished MG owner with mapping experience to take a look at your map.
I also now understand why someone gets paid for working up a custom map for a particular motorcycle. There’s not a “one fits all solution” for motorcycle ECU maps.
Thanks for reading.

It wasn't the best time for mapping in 02, most were doing PC stuff. I did fuel boxes for just opening things up on intake & exhaust. You didn't really need to change timing like a PC does.

Is there a different "MAP" for my V-7II that will return better mpg and cure that jerky stuff at idle in first gear ?

Good deal Dan.  I would be interested to know if you tracked fuel economy before and after the updated map.

I am very much more interested in fuel economy than acceleration these days.

***update***
Beetle contacted me this morning and advised that the cure for my map was accomplished by simply advancing the ignition timing, as the map had already been established.

TWA, my fuel mileage was fairly good except at constant higher speeds like interstate.
I just got back from a trip and the return was all 4 lane, 75 mph which produced 35mpg results.
Local riding usually renders around 45.
I’ll document the next tank and let u know how it does. 👍

Thank you for the post Ncdan. But there's certainly no need to write apologetically about the maps Beetle has worked so hard to make available. He and his map work should be celebrated and promoted in every corner of the Moto Guzzi world. Certainly the designers at Piaggio don't write the fuel maps for the bikes best performance etc. They, like other manufacturers, write fuel maps first and foremost to pass emissions standards. Just about any of today's fuel injected air and air/oil cooled bikes run way too lean from the factory. Therefore, aftermarket tuning oftens makes an impressive improvement even on a bike that hasn't had any intake or exhaust changes made to it.

Generally, people who say their bike 'runs fine' as delivered or who poo poo aftermarket tuning haven't ridden a bike with proper tuning. 'Proper tuning' entails the air/fuel ratio as well as timing. The difference is impressive, just like you found out. Mapping definitely makes a difference.

A device like the Power Commander V is nice and can often make impressive changes to the bike's performance. The critical detail being it has to be tuned by someone who really knows what they're doing and are educated on the bike and brand you have. Seldom from some generic H-D tuner shop.

Today, overwriting the factory fuel map at the ECU without a piggyback device is even better and more encompassing.
