Is my dash supposed to be this dim ?
« on: March 07, 2023, 04:50:58 PM »
I've a 1973 Eldorado, but it has an older police dash, possibly from an Ambassador.
Had a dead bulb for the speedometer illumination when I got it just before Christmas, and I've just replaced that.
BUT, I don't see how anyone could read this at night.
Are they all this dimly lit ?

Tried to take a photo and threw an old towel over the headlight, but the phone still makes it look brighter than it appears to the eye.

Find a higher wattage bulb, usually 5W is enough. I don't ride my V700 much at night but I can see it at night.
Maybe you need a bright LED wired up.

Edit: just got back from garage and the 2 V700 dashes on the shelf have 3W in them so I look in my bulb stock to find a whole box of 10 4W bulbs.

What wattage is in yours?  I'm sure I have the 4W in the one I'm riding. Been 10yrs since I was riding it at night but I could see it fine.

I completely swapped my old harness with a brand new one from Greg Bender (100 % recommendation on this point) and rebuilt my whole dash cluster. After that all the indicator lights and dash ilumination seem to be twice as bright as before. I think one mayor factor was that the bulb tubes/holders which will ground some of the bulbs with the dash housing were rusted between the tube and the tubes thread cap.

You would need to remove the tubes from the dash and pull them apart. I had to press fit them tight together after that though to make sure the two pieces won't come apart later. I think if I ever pull them apart again i will try some conductive epoxy to make sure that spot is sealed against any moisture.

Just put a new 3W bulb in.

I'll check out what else is available.
