Itchy Boots Crash
« on: May 20, 2024, 05:50:54 PM »
Well, now she's done it.  Simple crash in Tanzania, Africa results in broken foot and broken collar bone.  She can't lift the moto and can't ride it if someone else lifts it.  Logically she must be in a safe, rescued place or she wouldn't be able to post the video.  Lets see what administrative challenges this produces.  Not surprised.  Amazed that it took so long to happen.  Good use for her remote rescue communicator.

I've always feared she would get squished by one of those big trucks she squeezes by, but the lens probably makes those look worse than it is.

I was counting up her injuries since I started watching her on my fingers today ...
Foot injury going up that hill in Nevada
Leg bruising in the rally in Mexico
Broken hand riding into the hidden ditch in ... Spain?
Collar bone and foot in Tanzania
I've got a finger left over - I know I've forgotten one.
That's the combustion chamber of the turbo shaft. It is supposed to be on fire. You just don't usually see it but the case and fairing fell off.

Norally broke her hand at the Dinaric Rally in The Balkans.

She’ll be back (I hope).

+1 on the remote rescue communicator.  When she said she crashed, that was my first thought, how to get ahold of someone.  That has always been my fear is her safety in some of the less hospitable countries in the world, but so far she's done well.  I carry a ham radio HT with me and a repeater book.  When I used to live in WY, there was no cell service for hours SW of Casper, but the ham repeater network was top notch, someone was usually listening at the top of the hour for 10 minutes.

She is lucky she decided to go home for the surgery, if the screw up with the surgery and damaged lung had happened where she was before
God only knows what would have happened to her.  As it is she has a long row to hoe with her recovery.

Ironically the surgeons in the Netherlands were at fault for punctuing  her lung during the surgery. They missed seeing the collapsed lung and sent her home for 2 days with a collapsed lung. Only after going back to the ER did the find the collapsed lung. The docs admitted they missed the collapsed lung after taking the 1st  x-rays of the repaired clavicle. She reported on this in today's (WED) video. How ironic that she left Afica to go home and get 1st world care and they screwed up big time. She said she is planning another trip the fall and is publishing a book shortly. In Dutch only as the English translation is not out.

Looks like the fall is due to the infamous diagonal ditch that caught the front tire and threw her to the ground.

That's a fact.. she's a seriously good rider, and fearless eater.  She is showing parts of the world unaffected by national politics/turf wars for the most part. Happy, helpful people. Dorcia looks forward to her adventures, too. Maybe she's butch??

Norally's appeal crosses all boundaries. I met an adventure bike rider yesterday, retired gentleman sort, who expressed real concerns about her going places that three or four men would be nervous to visit. I thought about paying into Norally's Patreon to get the inside scoop and show support, but then decided that she probably has more money and better medical coverage than I do.

It's not luck. She is very intelligent and does lots of research before she plans her routes. She also is in contact with other riders who have travelled these areas, so she knows where it's safe to travel. Lots of respect for Noraly.
Pretty talented in the video production realm as well!
Cheers!

I gave up on motorcycle channels years ago. Today I follow a couple sailing channels. My favorite is: https://www.youtube.com/@SailingYachtFlorence

They just completed a 4 year, around the world trip in a 37' yacht. It has now been refitted and they plan to head north. I find this much more entertaining than any motorcycle channel.

I would say that time she ran into the drug runners in Mexico and them just telling her to go on was pretty lucky.

If I remember correctly, she announced to the cartels that she would be travelling through that area and that she was just passing through, etc.
Very smart, I think. I'm not saying that there hasn't been some luck along the way, but it's more along the lines of finding someone who can repair her bike or take her to the hospital.
Route planning she's pretty good at.

Cheers!

Yeah, that was an interesting sequence - she spent a couple of days locating somebody willing to pass the word to the cartels about her plans, and then she just had guys with weaponry waving her through as she came up on them. Good planning indeed.

She gets nothing but respect from me for her willingness to travel and for the effort she puts into it.

I've followed her from the beginning and her riding has definitely improved.  She speaks at least four languages, and has the ability to smile at everything.  I can only remember her getting flustered on camera once in all the seasons (at a border crossing in Africa where she was running out of daylight and was getting the run around from the border agents).

But I've also wondered out loud about her apparent complete lack of mechanical knowledge - everything from having random guys change a flat for her to not knowing that the bike was overheating  (I wonder what this red light means?).

I've also watched her blow though so many stop signs that I've lost count.  So yeah, she's had some luck.

But she keeps going, and I keep watching from my couch....

Edit to add: https://www.google.com/amp/s/zw.youtubers.me/itchy-boots/youtube-estimated-earnings.amp

And this is only her YouTube earnings.  She also has a Patreon site and sells merchandise,  So he actual net worth is in the millions at this point.  Good for her, eh?

1)  Doesn't matter how much she makes.

2) Earnings estimates of Youtubers are notoriously unreliable.

1 - It's not a criticism, just an observation. But still, I'm impressed.

2 - I agree, but the YouTube payment system is pretty clear, and can be confirmed.

3 - I might be a little jealous...

I have watched enough videos where the content creator shares their analytics to say that those websites and videos that estimate income from YouTube are way off and way optimistic.

If all your viewers are in the US and your content is something that draws advertisers you would be fortunate to make a maximum of $5000 per one million views.

Being that her viewership is worldwide the income would be a fraction of that per million.

Where content creators really make money is by having many sponsors who are getting product placement advertising and marketing videos disguised as content.

They also rely on “tips” through Patreon accounts and merchandise sales.

Then we have to remember that her home country takes a huge chunk of all her earnings so she can have the great health care she received after her wreck.  Yes I am being sarcastic.

I wish she was making a million a year because she is more entertaining than anything Hollywood actors have been putting out over the last decade or more.

But the link you provided puts a range of $118k to over a million. That is a huge variance and shows they are just putting it out there in hopes of clicks and their own revenue.
