My '95 cali died, and won't run. Shorted battery, elec probs
« on: April 02, 2023, 07:06:00 PM »
I shorted my '95 Cali 1100 battery terminal somehow whilst riding along at 60-70mph which obviously cut the engine, it also killed the battery dead, and I had to get recovery out to get back home.

I fitted a new battery. All fuses are good, and no melted wires that I can see. The bike started fine, took it out but the engine kept cutting out as I accelerated. It seemed to clear itself though, and ran well for a few miles round trip.

I took it out again just to a local shop. On the way back it kept cutting out badly. Every time, I got it revving again, but as soon as I let out the clutch and the engine came under slight load, it spluttered and cut out again, and again, and again, and on.

I managed to limp it back home luckily, because as soon as I got it in my backyard it cut out and won't start, or even try to fire again.

I'm sure it's electrical, and not fueling, but so far not managed to trace the fault.

Does anyone have any idea if there's any particular components or wiring paths that could have likely been damaged, despite not blowing any fuses, due to shorting the battery terminal whilst riding along?.

Thanks, Martin

Sidestand switch.
Relay weak (sort of common on those years.).
Other loose connection somewhere.

Have you monitored the charging of battery while engine running? Is the diagnostic light flashing when you plug it together?
Plug it together & see what it says.

If the battery positive terminal shorted to the frame, the only thing I can think of is the negative cable or its terminals.
