Another Stelvio Oil Leak thread

2009 Stelvio with approximately 11K miles. Spent a good part of the summer chasing down some wiring issues (self inflicted) changing out fluids, and servicing my swing arm along with installing a new rubber boot to the driveshaft from the transmission. Anyway, I went for a short ride on Sunday(18.3) miles, and when I got back and parked my bike I noticed a peculiar smell. Curiosity got the better of me and I turned around to investigate and found a small pool of oil forming on the brick under the left cylinder. What a bummer.  Cleaned the cylinder head area thoroughly, let it dry, doused the area with powder and went for a 7 mile ride this evening. Yep its leaking from just under the left cylinder, not a lot, but enough to be concerning. I checked the oil while cool and it shows half way in the middle of the cutout on the dipstick. What is going on?? I tried to post pictures but the link wont work.

I guess you’ll need to slather degreaser over everything, pressure wash the whole thing and take a SLOW ride until the torrent appears.
Removing the tank and airbox should provide enough access for a good visual.
A scissor lift and good lighting setup will get you there.

Has your bike been rollerised ?
I was just communicating with a budding young mechanic in Bungendore Aust.
The suggestion is to have a look around the phase sensor. My ‘07 Norge has a slight weep there and it collects in the same place as yours and is dispersed by the wind.
I will be back there soon and will remedy it. If your bike has NOT been rollerised, I implore you not to delay the installation of rollers.
You WILL destroy your motor in due course if you ignore the issue.

Have a really good look at the oil pressure switch, these have a habit of leaking and it tends to run round the base of the LH cylinder, made me panic for a bit when mine failed until I traced the leak.

Okay, Ill do that. The leak is coming from under the left cylinder.

Where is the oil pressure switch located? Where is the phase sensor located? I have a manual and diagram of bike and neither comes up in search.

Just for the record, it is not bearings that are the subject of the upgrade, it’s a specific part of the overhead gear.

The oil leakage from left cylinder in 1200 8V block is quite a standard.
Possible causes (at least on my Norge):
Oil pressure switch under airbox close to left head.
Blow-by pipe from left head cover to airbox. Check/replace it. I replaced it with a siliconic version and reversed left/right pipes to avoid too short curves.
Air rubber duct from airbox to left throttle valve

Oil pressure switch is at the bottom of the LH cylinder inside the V of the engine, Phase sensor (crank position sensor) is forward of the LH cylinder on the crankcase, height is just above exhaust level.

Thank you for all the replies and help gentleman. Kind of bummed though. Its mid October and starting to get chilly outside. As mentioned, I had just put the bike back together and was looking forward to a couple of rides before winter sets in. Not to be. Looks like I will have to put it in storage till spring when I can figure things out. Life goes on.

Might do that. The oil leak isn't gushing out. Since I have to tear it apart again, I am in the process of sourcing the parts for the rollerization as we speak. That way I can do it all next spring.

Both the Oil Pressure Switch, and the Phase/Cam/Crank Sensor, are generic Automotive item, i.e. dirt-cheap and easily found.

Looking down into the 'V', Alternator is top-left . . .





Original Oil Px Switch on right, it was leaking through the Body, internally, and Oil was coming out from the Plug, not from the Base of the Switch.





Replacement is slightly taller, but the Thread is the same as the original, as is the Electrical Connection.

Any half-decent car spares place should be able to source one from that list, the one I went to had the Blue Print ones on the Shelf, around £8, 3 or 4 yrs back.

Same with the Phase Sensor.
I've used the Facet 9.0032 on a few Stelvios now.
There may be one or more thin Shims under the Mounting, transfer them to the new one, as long as the Sensor Body is exactly the same length as the original, I've yet to find one different.
Shims can stick to the sensor, or to the Engine (or both), so make sure you don't drop any.
