Speedhut gauges for a 1987 Cali II

I am going to upgrade my gauges and see lots of folks are liking the speedhut units.
Has anyone installed these in a 1987 or similiar California II where they need to fit in the rubber housing.
The measurements I see in speedhut seem to be a little big for that.
I want to retain the rubber dash assembly.

I fit a speedhut tach in the stock rubber dash of my 84 Cali II. I needed to take an abrasive disk on a dremel, and slightly enlarge the inner aspect of the rubber housing. You can force it in there without modification, but the larger diameter tach distorts the housing to one side. If you were replacing both instruments, you may be able to get away, with forcing them both in there, with some lube, and it will look "even".  Either way, the speedhuts are a great improvement, I also put a speedhut tach in my 98 EV, with excellent results.

+1. Unfortunately they don't come in 80 or 100mm sizes. some mod's must be made, but it's worth it.

On your 84 did you retain the cable drive for the tach or go to the coils?

I also installed a Speedhut elec tach in my Cal 2, but installed it in an aftermarket fairing rather than the OEM tach housing. I explored that route, but am shamed to say the tight fit and need for modification steered me away. But without an aftermarket fairing to install into, you have little choice. The Speedhut unit is nice to look at and I installed to the coils. So now I have a dead OEM tach still in it's housing with the needle broken off rattling around at the bottom of the dial. Sort of goes with the rest of the bike.

I decided to go with the speedhut 2 5/8" gauges and modify them to fit in my Cali II rubber dash.
It was a bit of work and I ended up putting the Speedhut gauges inside the Veglia cans as I did not think the Speedhut plastic housings were strong enough to handle sliding them into the rubber housing.
I made an adapter ring out of 1/4" UHMW that the Speed Hut gauge clamps around, it is the same OD as the old Veglias.  Then put four 1/8" bolts through that ring into the old Veglia can (bolts on the inside of the can).  The mount is very solid and mounted fine in the rubber dash.
The Speed Huts are very easy to setup and I likr the finished product as well.

Speedhut gauges are first class.  I've used them on several motorcycles. Speedhut gives you a lot of leeway in designing the appearance of your gauge and you can also have them omit the "Speedhut" logo from the face of the gauge (unless they've stopped that option).  At one time, if I remember correctly, you could send them artwork of custom logos to print on the face.  Good product.  I hope they keep going.

I had a busted tach on the Sport1100i, but the Speedhut replacement came out great.  They worked with me to get the font, the "RPMx1000, and the redline just right. And the eagle at the bottom.
