heim joints
« on: February 03, 2024, 11:49:46 AM »
Where can I get just the hiem joints for a 2012 V7C shift linkage? The cheapest assembly I found is from Harpers MG for $52.06. All I need is the joints, not the rod too. Thanks in advance.

I got some mine for my V7 II off Amazon. 6mm dia. 1.0 thread pitch. I have some extra since the lefts and rights came each in 4-packs, if you want me to mail you a pair? That is—if the two bikes use the same linkage (too lazy to look up parts fiche at the moment).

The link to the LHS joints that I bought:

Can’t find the link to the RHS rod ends.

So it uses both right hand and left hand threads?

I’m only assuming. In order to adjust on the fly, without removing a joint from its attachment, you would need a LH on one end, RH on the other. My R80/7’s shift linkage is like this, and I’m pretty sure the Guzzi is as well, but it’s been a while since I bought these and didn’t get around to installing them yet. I can check when I get back home later today. Simple enough process of checking the exposed threads.

Some are some aren’t. If it can be adjusted in place without taking one end loose it has reversed thread on one end.

My B750 most definitely had one reversed.

For some reason Guzzi did not have that linkage shaft at 90 deg. but on a slight angle. As a result the rod used to bend at the weakest point, where the thread started. The original heim joints were not the greatest either.

I ended up making a new rod out of 8mm bright steel. I turned the ends down to 6mm to accommodate the new (sturdier and much better quality) heim joints and made it so when it was all in place there was no unsupported thread showing. It makes the rod non adjustable but lets face it, how often to you need to get in and adjust it? The sturdier rod has been absolutely bullet proof.

Hi Chuck,

I have to say that I really like McMaster Carr.  They're  20 minutes down the road from me, they're my go to for misc hdwe, small sheet metal and rod needs and more.  They've got paper (specs) on most if not all of their stuff and more reaonably priced than a hardware store.  Getting back to the heim joint replacement thing, McMaster Carr carried the materials but I think the idea originated through Charley Mullendore & the Loop group, Greg Bender & TOT and other contributors.  And, I didn't go with the high priced (weather resistant) joints offered because my initial intent was to only make a "mock up" set up.  Well, here it is 4 years later and 10k miles and still running the mock up.

ACE HARDWARE here in Connecticut has them in stock, both left and right threads.

I got my Heim Joints at ACE for my project.

Thats an option but you also might try a farm equipment store (John Derre as an example.
