Auto rust
« on: May 16, 2026, 04:55:47 PM »
What’s the best spray auto rust preventive? I had a 2005 Ford Ranger for 20 years and it never got the rust you see on all these truck wheel wells. I sprayed this stuff everywhere I could stick the tube twice a year because I got it free from work but I can’t find it anywhere. Now I got a new truck and want to start again. The Rainbow stuff left a greasy coating that never went away

I've heard good things about Fluid Film.

Gibbs or Fluid Film.

I keep Fluid Film in the shop (because it’s on the shelf locally) to use on bare crs as a rust preventive.  It’s lanolin-based and works well to keep rust at bay here in humid SC summers.  Some car acquaintances use Gibbs as a rust preventive on old cars and like it a lot.  I need to try it.

Edit- forgot to mention..  years ago, we got quite a number of cans of Rainbow hornet spray and a couple of cans of penetrating oil out of old Bellsouth telephone vans that came through the auction.  It’s the absolute best hornet spray I’ve ever used.   Looks like there’s some corrosion preventative and oil products on their page. Maybe one of these is the same as what you’ve been using?

Surface Shield by PB Blaster is also highly rated.

Of course, any penetrating oil or petroleum product is a good idea in terms of rust prevention.

There it is . Thanks . It’s weird a lot of these products say they’re also lubricants.

Back in the day and maybe even today, used motor sprayed to the underside would work. Had to be reapplied every fall. Today some of the modern outfits use a similar Oil type spray. Rust Kote is one.

Yep.  Growing up in the rustbelt of Rochester, NY, we sprayed the hell out of cars & truck with used motor oil, mixed with Kerosene or diesel fuel.

Oddly enough, vehicles that leaked engine oil, transmission oil, or hydraulic oil resisted rusting much, much better.  Eliminate the free path for oxygen and the rust stops.
