'17 Cali 1400 "Enter Code" questions
« on: May 08, 2018, 12:05:25 PM »
New 2017 Cali 1400 Tour.  Supplied with two keys, and two key fobs

The starting procedure is to turn on the key, and "Enter Code" appears on the instrument cluster.  Hit the small button on the fob (beep sound), and then press the starter button EVERY time ya want to start it.  It does not start without pressing the button on the fob.  .......Tried both keys.

After some amount of research - I am a bit confused.  What code? Are these keys supposed to be programmed from the dealer?

And what would happen if I lose the key fob - or if the battery in the fob runs flat ?

When ya shut the bike off, it re-arms itself (single beep) after 50 seconds. I read the owner's manual about all of this but I must have missed the pertinent information on codes.  Actually, it does mention codes and then sends ya to a section that doesn't exist.

Called the dealer - they had no clue, but promised to call Guzzi and get some information.

It wants you to enter a personal security code. This is a five digit code of your choosing that can be inserted through the dash using the toggle switch. I can’t remember the exact sequence for the Cali but I think if you just go to the main menu it will have a ‘Change the code’ function. Choose that and a five dash icon will appear on the LCD screen. The first dash, (Or it might start as a zero?) will start scrolling through numerals from 1 to 9 and then back to zero. When it reaches the numeral you want give the toggle a quick press and it will move on to the next one. In case you screw up WRITE THE NUMERALS DOWN AS YOU GO THIS IS IMPORTANT AS IF YOU DON’T REMEMBER THEM YOU’RE STUFFED! Repeat this operation for the remaining four numerals and that’s your code. If you want to change it? Go back into the menu and start again, but this time it will ask you for the current code before asking you to start the new coding process again.

I know it sounds complex. It’s not when you get the hang of it.

As far as the alarm goes in the bag the books came in there is a small plug with a loop wire on it. If you don’t want to use the alarm this can be pugged into the alarm connector sub loom to disable it.

Note. This is all being recited from memory at 3.20AM so confirm with a few other owners before going nuts!

There is also a procedure  where you can disable the auto arming featue of the alarm so you only have to use the fob when you want to arm or disarm the alarm (at least on my 2013) .  I cant locate the instructions at the moment but maybe another 1400 owner can chime in.  I'll look through my pile o stuff to see if I can find it.

If you want to bypass the use of the fob completely, there is a bypass plug in your paperwork or tool kit which you can plug into the connection under the left side cover. At least my 2015 offered that option which I chose to do it it works fine. The connector is a white plug with a wire loop attached.

So, what does this personal security code do for me?

What if I never enter a personal security code ?

A lot of folks use the last 5 of the VIN. Easy to remember or find if you forget. What it will do for you is allow you to start the bike if the key was not recognized.

Thanks, everyone.

In the mean time, I've completely bypassed the alarm system.  Key fob appears dead as a hammer.

Both keys function and everything else appears normal.

I have not entered a "code" - so "CODE" appears each time the key is switched "on" and disappears when the engine is started.

What you're describing is normal until you enter a code. I cannot speak to the alarm fob. Once you put in a code of your choosing, you will not seer that message any more. Just a note about my previous comment: if the bike ever got parted out for some reason, knowing the code would be important to the seller as well as the buyer. Without the code, the dash would be worthless to the new owner. As I mentioned before, some use the last 5 of the VIN, some make them up. If a random code is made up, it would be good to note it somewhere for posterity. If it were ever sold, tape the code to the gauge for the next person.

BUT, for the here and now, if something happened to the key reader and you were away from home, a code will get you out of a jam.

Maybe a silly question - but if a code was never entered, and the key had issues communicating with the system...... then couldn't ya THEN enter a code?  Sounds too easy, I know.  I was having these random thoughts.... maybe if I never entered a code, then if there was a problem - a code could be entered at that time.  Wouldn't have to remember a code, because none had ever been entered.

The other question is - if I DO enter a code, do I then need to reprogram both keys, or does this have nothing to do with keys ?

At the present time , both keys work.  This makes me happy.

IIRC, there is a default code but I don't recall what it might be. Perhaps someone can clarify this point.............. ... But, until you change it, you will see the message on start up.

No, if you set a code, you do not need to do anything with the keys. Entering a code will simply allow the bike to be started if a key was not recognized. You could. for instance, have another key cut as a spare but not programed and using a code would allow you to start the bike with that key.

I don't think so. You'll get the "enter your user code." If you can't, you are dead in the water. Just enter the code, fer heavensake.. Make it something you *won't* forget. Write it down in your owners manual for the next owner. Hope you never need it..

Interesting discussion - I am on the road and had my security code transponder run over by a car, believe it or not. And now it damaged and I am stuck.

And when trying to enter a new code using the menu function, I can’t get there for some reason… I press down the menu button and nothing happens…

Any ideas why? Could it be that I have an early 2013 Cali 1400 ? Maybe it didn’t get all the bells and whistles then???

Many thanks for any advice,

Roy
