Guzzis in Cuba
« on: May 29, 2024, 09:47:33 PM »
One of my best Guzzi friends (and previous WG member username FarmerFred iirc) recently took a trip Cuba.  He sent me this link including several older Moto Guzzis  from the trip.  Enjoy!

Cubans have a real talent for keeping older vehicles alive. Great photos.

Not sure it is talent so much as necessity.

They’re great people. I followed his wife (on her 750SS) home one day back in early 95.  Geared up, I didn’t realize she was a she…  it was awkward when she removed her helmet.  That was the beginning of our long friendship.  He rebuilt the engine on my V7 Sport in the 90’s when I was really broke.  It’s been perfect ever since.  They’re the real deal.

Fred recently retired and said he left the parking lot on his last day and rode cross country to the west coast to celebrate.  Hard to beat that.

Peter Egan came down from Wisconsin to a small rally in southern Indiana to pick up a Triumph from Fred. I didn't know who he was.. just another bearded Guzzi Guy to me. Told him if Fred built it, it was a good one.  Took him for a ride for ice cream in the Jack-All sidecar rig. Still didn't know who he was..

When I met Fred and Kim, they had a basement full of Triumphs and Kim’s Ducati with an old Pontiac parked next to them.  No guzzis yet.  Dave Vendola (sp?) lived somewhat nearby in West Knox. I met him through his daughter’s boyfriend that worked in the bagel shop with me.  When I mentioned him to Fred, he knew him and his Lemans BoT racing exploits.

Later, after my bagel shop time, my V7 Sport bottom end went out after me only replacing the top end.  Fred said he would go through it because he had always wanted to do a Guzzi engine and he knew I would get distracted & never get it done.  He spoke the truth..   He only charged me $100 for his labor- literally the best deal I’ve ever had doing bikes.  I tuned it, but he built it.

I’ve said before that I’m lucky that they have tolerated me for so many years.  Very cool to be on their radar.

On a side note, for one of bobresob’s meet & greets in Mill Springs near Asheville, Dave Vendola rode down from West Knox.  He & I had an absolute blast rambling on like schoolgirls after 20+ yrs.  We talked about Fred and him finding & restoring his gorgeous blue Lemans I.  Fred simply does things other people aspire to do but don’t quite achieve.
