V7 III Speedometer Needle Issue
« on: August 19, 2024, 06:33:52 PM »
I have now seen at least two V7 smallblock variants that the speedo needle is at or over the 130mph mark with the key in the off position. When you turn the key to on, the needle sweeps from it's about 130mph resting point clockwise towards 0mph and continues to ?? (I forgot the mph it swept to) and then sweeps back counter clockwise to 130mph again and stays there. So it seems to be working, just the needle is not stopping where it should at about 0mph and doing it's sweep from there.

When your riding the bike the speedo moves, but would show, lets just say 0mph, and you know you are doing like 30-40mph.

Has anyone heard of a fix for this? Or has it crudded out and you need a new speedo?

I did some research on this, the needle is controlled by a stepper motor and has electronic needle stops. Also read about maybe the needle came loose and needs to be pulled off and reset, but most found that doubtful. But unfortunately There was no fix for this posted.

Any thoughts??

A friend of mine has a Racer & it was doing that & needle came off, he ordered a new one. Dealer sold it to him at his cost cause this stuff should not happen.

With a stepper motor instrument if you power down it will stay where it is.
I\m not certain this is the problem, perhaps it has a loose power feed.

Not sure about the speedometers but the needle coming loose on the tachometers of these is very common. When it happened to mine I took the lens off and reset the needle to fix it.

Thanks for the replies so far. Still a bit of a mystery I guess?
