Deceleration popping 2007 Norge
« on: September 09, 2024, 02:40:10 PM »
Hi

I installed a beetle tune for a stock Norge about 6 years ago that completely cured my deceleration popping.  Recently the popping returned and it is baffling me as to why?  I reloaded the tune and it had no effect.  There are no stored codes in the ECU to help the troubleshooting.  I reset my throttle TPS and check my throttle body sync using Guzzidiag.  Again no effect.

I looked at my merge pipe and did not appear to see any exhaust leaks.  Should I be looking elsewhere?

Thanks
Mike

I realize I'm not answering your question, just saying my 2007 Norge has always "burbled" on deceleration and it doesn't bother me at all.

Any other symptoms? Fuel consumption changed?

Popping can be caused by a lean condition (air leaks), or unburnt fuel in the pipes. Noticed any hesitation? A leaky injector may be allowing extra fuel into the combustion chamber, or intermittent spark issue may be allowing unburnt fuel into the pipes.

Also check your headers and gaskets.

Y’all seem to have covered everything that I would have tried.
On the exhaust system leak thing, if your bike is running a nice mixture, you’ll struggle to see an exhaust leak, especially around the header pipe/cylinder head junction. Maybe throw a new pair of header pipe gaskets at it and seal up the joints with appropriate goo.
When you reset the high speed balance, did you have the idle bleeds closed and then set the idle using ONE screw ?
How are your valve clearances, 4 & 6 thou’ ?
Is your throttle closing completely when shut ?

I’ve got nothing else…

I would recheck that merge pipe for a crack. Had mine crack. If I remember, I didn’t see or notice until I took it off. It cracked in a bend I couldn’t easily see or even feel. Had it welded and my popping got noticeably better.

I think it is a normal
"thing" when changing to a more open pipe and the stock pipe hides it with baffling.   I have a "Staintune"  Pipe from AU on my 07 Norge, and this weekend I took out the little silencer at the end for a test ride and the deceleration popping mutiliplied significantly many times over...  Yes, I reinstalled it.

I’ve been running this Staintune since Christ died.

I’ve had no popping issue since it’s been Beetle’d.
Roper told me it will be stronger with it in, but I just love the mellow tonal sound without the dB killer. I have never had it in…

Yeah mate.
The 8V ones seemed to be a work in progress for a while, but the 2VPC ditch pump ones seemed great from the get go.
I really love mine.

I bought a 2012 last summer that one of two PO's had installed a gizmo which was supposed to cure the popping and low throttle jerkiness. I respectfully suggest it was a waste of money.

Don't remember the brand and not at home to run it down. Curiously it was a product from Denmark.

I have the same problem with too much popping on deceleration. Is there any real danger to the motor or is that a product of sunburnt fuel in the exhaust?

If it's decel pop, then not something to worry about.

I'd remove that tool as it dumps way more fuel into the cylinders than necessary, long term that can cause problems.

Yes, that triggered my vast, but sporadic memory. Booster Plug sounds right. I will track it down and remove it. If for no other reason to see what the real life difference is.

Beetle map solves most of the issue. You actually feel the difference.
