NGC- Fake evaporust
« on: February 01, 2025, 07:28:19 PM »
Today I made some fake evaporust to clean the rusty throws on the crankshaft for my 427FE build.  It worked great and costs about $40 to make 10 gallons vs $30 for one gallon of the real Evaporust.  That’s definitely Guzzi content.

Total soak time for crankshaft, one end at a time in a 5 gallon bucket, was a little under 90 min.  I expedited things by scrubbing loosened rust away with a toothbrush and ss scrubber on heavier rust & rinsing it down the drain.

Cleaned crank, ready to be oiled-

If you have some rusty parts, this stuff works pretty good.

when the title says NGC (as this one does..) that means Non Guzzi Content…. Read the title and you’ll know you can skip the post.  I may be a peckerhead but I try to be polite about it.

FWIW, When I tried posting this thread the first time, the upload appeared to timed out and the thread was lost. Checked the forum and it was not here.  So I typed the thread up again and tried to repost.  The same thing happened again.    I checked the  forum and there was no thread.  I just came back to attempt posting the thread for a third time and found the two previous attempts had actually been successful- even though they weren’t visible to me for whatever reason.  Since no one had replied to the first thread, I was able to delete it without bothering the mods.

Moderators review the threads on a daily basis and determine what is or not a proper subject matter.
Yes there is a rule that the threads should be “ motorcycle related”. That being acknowledged, the forum owner has allowed some leeway with off topic subjects, if there are subject matter that can be used in other fields of interest, such as motorcycles, a “campfire” atmosphere is encouraged at WGC. I’m sure most of us here at one time or another battled rust on our motorcycles.
Thank you for your concern however allow the moderators to do their job and make the decisions as to what threads cause issues for the WGC Forum.
No further responses on this subject.
Thanks

Dan

I tried evaporust, it works. It is expensive. I prefer white vinegar from the local grocery store. I think it works just as well. After I'm done removing the rust, I can pour it on weeds.

That a sideoiler 427 ? What's it going into? The only thing I don't like about the FE block is having to pull the pushrods to change the intake manifold.

This block is a Oct 1963 center oiler or top oiler, built with a correct Medium Riser top end for a 1967 Galaxie 500.  The block was a very unexpected great score last summer, leading to an equally unexpected great project this winter.

I’ve used vinegar in the past and like the finish left by this fake evaporust better. It doesn’t seem to be as aggressive.  I’m anxious to soak some rusty bike parts I have in it, especially mixed ferrous & alloy assemblies, and see what it does to aluminum.   This stuff is equally non-toxic as well.

I just figured it was our WiFi acting up again.   It takes hours to upload a video to my YouTube channel, usually approx 10 hours to upload a 30 min video….not kidding.  It’s awful but it is what it is.

My first car was a 1960 Galaxie 4 door with a 352, and my last full size .car was a 1969 XL sports roof with a 390 2bbl and a cruise o matic tranny, bucket seats and console shift. I miss that car.

I had dozens of cars in my teens and 20’s but one that I miss was a 1963 Mercury Monterey with a 390, 2 bbl, and 3 speed on the column. The sliding rear window gave great airflow with little wind noise. No AC in that car.

Clint, when you get that 427 up and running in that car, I’d love to see it. Maybe we can meet for a cheeseburger 👍

Sounds like a plan, Dan.  I need some destinations for it.  It will be a few months. Dropped crank at crank shop yesterday.

Block, heads, etc are already at Thackston Brothers Garage, one of the last legit old privateer Ford racing shops/engine builders near Spartanburg.

Mr Thackston is 80 yrs old and working on rebuilding a 1968/69 Torino that he built and personally raced in Grand National (NASCAR) series beginning in 1970. He recently re-acquired the car after 30+ yrs.   He has built an untold number of 390-427-428 engines.  I first bought parts from him back in the 80's.   Really thrilled to have him doing the serious work.

Should be an awesome big red 427-4 speed Galaxie

I’d say he will do as good of a job on that as Holman and Moody👍

Iirc At least two of Thackston's primary pieces of machine equipment are from Holman Moody.  One came through another owner and one was bought by them at the HM auction. He told me all about, along with the histories of the rest of their equipment.

His crankshaft balancing machine was used by the previous local owner (Ken Miller, another Grand National veteran who built for Bondy Long, Fred Lorenzen and Ned Jarrett in the 60's) to balance my 428PI rotating assembly for my first 67 Galaxie back in 89.

For folks here who dont know about stock car racing and where I live, Spartanburg was very significant.  Bud Moore and Cotton Owens had their shops here.  David Pearson's home & shop with airstrip is not quite a mile across 2-3 fields from my house.  Many other big names raced via this area.  And, if the city fathers hadn't shot down the plans, the Talledaga Super Speedway would have been built here as the Spartanburg Super Speedway near the downtown airport... That "miscalculation" is still seen as the biggest blunder in the city's economic development history.
