New to me…used 2022 MG V85TT Adventure
« on: April 12, 2025, 05:41:18 AM »
I picked it up from a private seller in Lawrenceville Georgia last night and rode it home about 130 miles through Atlanta traffic etc.  I work hard so I deserve it!  I know a lot of people talk about all the bikes faults on here but I like it!  3600 miles on a 2022.  Showroom condition!  Woo hoo, congratulations to me!

Don’t overfill the rear drive.  Initially the book said 160-180 ml.  They changed it to 160 flat.  I’m working off memory here.  Anyone confirm or correct?  Does it have an aftermarket “Y” pipe?  I did that immediately, makes tranny oil change much cleaner.

You are correct on the rear fluid level being too high and pushing fluid out onto the rear wheel.  Originally it was 180.  I checked my first V85 and it was 210 from the factory.  They then decided  160 was the proper level.  Three years later my son and I bought two more.  I took them home and drained them both.  Guess what?  They were both 180.  Obviously, someone at the factory never got the message.  While I am at it, all three never had any grease in the headset bearings until I greased them the day they got to the house.  All three have been flawless since the first day.  I bought a Stelvio figuring it would be perfect, but I still lean towards the V85.

How involved were they to grease?  Complete knockdown and grease or just add?
Thanks,

To grease the headset I put the bike on a lift and remove the front wheel.  You also should remove the calipers so there is enough room as the forks drop down.  Loosen the handlebars and roll them out of the way so you can get to the steering head nut.  Once removed, the top triple will lift off and the bottom will slide down.  I use the Belray waterproof grease and just smear it around the top of the bearing to get it packed.  I then put a coating all around the exterior and also apply a coating to the inside of the races in the head.  Reinstall and tighten to where there is a light drag on the bars turning side to side.  Install and re-torque the calipers, forks, and wheel and.............go ride.

Guzzi is not the only culprit that saves on grease.  The only bikes I have ever found to be fully packed were the several Altas that I had.

Or maybe they determined the correct amount of grease for the application.

Granted, the most miles I have put on a bike us 60,000 miles but when I have serviced the head bearings according to the service manual I have never seen rust or binding.  I also never use a pressure washer on a motorcycle.

The rear end was changed to 160 or 5.4 Oz. But it was just reported there is a bulletin out there for the V7-850 to drop down to 130CC. I plan on using 140 from here on.
It would be nice if a dealer would confirm this.

I just HAMLIN about dropping from 160 to 130.
He has had no bulletin on that being correct.  As an aside, 160 has not caused any issues.

Talk about good dealers and PDI.  Last time I was there assisting in the shop the instruction from the boss (Jim) was every new bike was to have the rear drained and refilled with the correct amount.  Good dealers do exist.
