Leaking quick connect fuel fitting
« on: May 27, 2025, 09:45:22 AM »
I found my 2007 CalVin was dripping fuel.  I pulled the gas cap and there was a pretty stiff rush of air from filler--out, not in.  The gas leak immediately stopped.  I lifted the tank, and I'm pretty sure the leak was coming  from the quick connect union.  However, I can't be sure if it was from the hose attached to the female end of the fitting, the union itself, or perhaps even the red elbow at the pump.

I have attached a picture of the female part of the coupling.  It looks pretty grotty: the metal fingers appear to have at least light corrosion, and the rubber washer (o-ring?)--though I see no cracking shows a deep indent and some grottiness as well.  As you can see from the second pic, the fuel line does not go all the way up into the fitting.  I took out the clamp screw, and while the hose will turn on the (I assume) barbed prong, I can neither force it further or, nor get it off.  Is that as far on as it goes?

I know there are plenty of posts about getting the union apart, and about replacing it with something else, but I don't want to go there.  (I'm selling the bike and I want to fix it without a huge investment of time or money.)

The elbow is now available (at an absurd price) but the union is not at the moment.

My question is: has anyone replaced either or both of the disconnect halves with the stock parts, and were there any particular issues.

Also, I have attached a catalog pic of the female half.  Why is there a tiny o-ring on it.  What is the ID of the hose, and how would that o-ring contribute to sealing the fitting  into the hose?

I think I’ve read here where members have replaced that connector with a simple off/on leaver with shutoff.
Maybe someone else will chime in shortly.

I think it won't leak if the fuel tank doesn't pressurize. Maybe you have a pinched hose not allowing the tank to breath?
I went for the BMW connector recommended here. beemer graveyard I think is the site.

Beemer Bone Yard not graveyard and likley the connector you are referencing are CPC chrome brass quick connects with a Viton o-ring.

Well, I don't know if this will be of use to anyone, but here goes.

First off, I had removed the evap canister when I first got the bike ten years ago.  (I thought it might help with some annoying hunting at idle.  It did  seem to settle the idle down.)

Someone suggested my tank wasn't venting, so  I removed the one-way valve from the hose that leads from the front top of the tank to the (now deleted canister) and replaced it with a short connector fitting.  So now the tank should vent freely to atmosphere.  (Not great for the atmosphere, I know, but I apologize and plead hard times...)

For the quick-connect supply line fitting, I replaced the stock piece with the female half of this:

..which cost just a few bucks on Amazon.

It seemed to mate perfectly with the stock red elbow fitting on the pump  and is WAAYYY easer to disconnect than the original.

So far, no evident leaks.

Like I say, someone may find this cheap workaround useful.
