My V9 would have the 1100EV for breakfast
« on: August 19, 2025, 03:34:13 AM »
The other day, I rode through and under-sea tunnel with an 8-degree slope. Accelerating in top gear, my brother's former Cali 1100 EV would stall at 70 mph. My 2017 V9 Roamer stalled at 82 mph. That is a substantial difference. Both bikes would have gone faster with a downshift or two, but I think it is a good test of what useable power there is awailable during normal riding.

Nerd stuff:
The Cali engine is 25% bigger than the V9
The Cali make 35% more claimed power than the V9
The Cali makes 52& more claimed torque than the V9
The Cali is geared 11% taller than the V9
The Cali is 33% heavier than the V9
The Cali rpm @ stall speed was 3500 rpm, the V9 rpm @ stall speed was 4500

Take them to a dragstrip. My ‘76 LM850 is quicker and faster than my ‘98 EV. 13 flat at 103 MPH, vs 13.8 @ 94 MPH for the EV.
Top on the EV was about 120, vs 130 on the LeMans. The latter posted in more than road test back in the day. Not verified by me but in the ball park based on a tach reading of 8300 in 5th.

You just showed that the transmissions are geared different. And you don't like to downshift.
I'm not sure I understand your goal.

The Cali rpm @ stall speed was 3500 rpm, the V9 rpm @ stall speed was 4500

Try the roll-on test again with the Cal EV in 4th gear and report back.

Yep…
You’ve proven something, but I don’t think anyone knows what.
But you’ve answered the question nobody asked. Also, what do you mean by “stalled…”.

This is all mostly BS, I know NO ONE who rides like you. ANY bike will stall if under rpm in a gear. That is being abusive to your bike

Not sure what year EV his brothers bike is but on the ‘98s with the P8 computer, it made no power above 6k RPM and dropped off a cliff above 5K. I thought I read that the 98 map had no data above 6k. It sure felt that way. Some of the Hot Rodders like Westmoreland used the Sport 1100 computer in the EV to improve top end power??

I'm going to assume by 'stall' he means the motorcycle stops accelerating and 'tops out' NOT stalling or killing the motor. But I agree, it is not conducive to long term health if the motor is lugging below 3000 RPM.

Yes, I meant that the engine could no longer accelerate.

Please tell my why sitting at maximum speed at 4500 rpm will hurt the engine more than at 6800 rpm. Every engine is at its most efficient under maximum load (full throttle) where the engine produce maximum torque. That is where you get the most power per drop of fuel. The V9 is claimed to make max torque at 3000 rpm, although their own graph shows a slightly higher peak at 5500 rpm. Regardless, I cannot see the engine being harmed above 3500 rpm under full load more than at higher rpm. Although WOT always put max load on an engine for any given rpm, so the engine will last longer under lighter loads.

I suspect your right Tom, but we are unlikely to ever prove such.

The thing about the first gen v9, is it pulls hard immediately off idol and keeps pulling so until around 6k.  I have heard many times that a Guzzi pulls like a freight train, and that is the nearest analogy I can think of, but the thing is, it's more pronounced in the V9 than any other MG I have ridden.   Don't get me wrong, my buddies 96I and Ev, along with my old B1100 as well as my current v85TT will all spank the v9 in a 0-100, probably 0-60.   But the visceral feel of the acceleration from a v9 is something special, I'm not sure why.
My point is, I get what he is saying, but I also get the reality that the v9 is not as fast as it make you feel.  But that's good, because even with upgraded suspension, I wouldn't want to be rolling at 120mph on a v9!
