An apology to two Harley riders - DOH!

I'm 71, started riding at 14, still at it, own multiple bikes including two Harleys, and other riders are extended family unless proven otherwise.

I was headed out of Mauston, WI this morning on a two lane rural road to pick up some metal stock in my wife's SUV and had some celery strings stuck between my teeth. We keep dental floss in our cars so I got a length and, steering down the mostly straight road with my forearms, went at it. I crested a hill and headed downward with the morning sun shining through the windshield. Two Harley riders were approaching, staggered, taking up the whole oncoming lane, so set my hands on top of the wheel and I steered with the heels of my hands and moved to the right of my lane to make sure they had room. As the lead rider approached, he threw a hand up in the air with a twisting WTF motion and the following rider raised both of his hands and wagged them in the air. I couldn't figure out what was going on until I looked down at my hands, with the dental floss tight between the tips of both middle fingers, giving the riders a perfect horizontal double bird on top of the steering wheel.

Sooooooooo, if you happen to hear someone pissed off at some cager who flipped him and his buddy off on a beautiful Monday morning for absolutely no reason, please give them my explanation and heartfelt apology. Or share this and maybe the word will eventually get to them.

Since you enjoyed that one and I don't mind laughing at myself, I'll tell you another.  I lived up in Alaska, CFO of a small rural hospital, and was driving to Anchorage to do some shopping. Beautiful day, even by Alaska standards. I stopped at a general store in Coopers Landing, which was known for great burgers.  There was a compound or place nearby where some Hells Angels lived.  A couple of them pulled up outside in an old pickup and got out, old guys wearing black elastic back braces under their colors, bare armed, long grey hair, grey beards and came into the store. One of them placed an order at the grill and backed up and stood next to me to wait.  I looked over and noticed he had a new tattoo on his bicep and he saw me looking.  "New ink." I said.  He said yeah, he had been a charter member of the Oakland chapter and had been at the 50th anniversary gathering and got the tat to commemorate the event.  I said something like "nice" and he replied that the only problem was people remembered tattoos better than they did faces and could identify him by his tats.  I said, "Ah, evidence of a misspent youth" and his eyes narrowed and he stared at me and I think had there not been a bunch of people in the store, I would have received a royal beat-down.  I was being ironic, but I think that was lost on him.

Nice Harley guy...
Some years ago we lived on Long Island and I was heading eastbound to Montauk on my Ducati 851.  I needed to pee so stopped on the side of the road, went back into the bushes.  I came out and was standing next to the bike about to remount when a guy on a turquoise/white big Harley pulled up and asked me if I was OK/needed help.  Turned out it was Billy Joel!  We talked for a couple of minutes about motorcycles; I told him I liked his music and we rode together to Montauk and split up there.  I went to a local bar/restaurant, he probably went to someplace that they wouldn't even have let me in!!  Nice guy!!

A couple of years later I saw "his" Harley for sale at Ghost Motorcycles in Port Washington...
