Not just a discount on parts, not just parts...

Parts AND labor!

Not a 2012 bike, a 2011 model.

You can argue all you want about why they paid for parts and labor but the fact is they did.

A coincidence that there was finally someone willing to file a complaint with NHTSA and a lots of noise was made about this issue and doing the right thing?

Regardless, great news and proof that you can sit on your hands, go with the flow and suck it up or stand up, demand satisfaction and get it.

And kudos to Moto Guzzi for doing the right thing.

You took a lot of flak here for standing up for the right thing.  I hope your efforts have contributed to a positive outcome for all the Guzzi owners affected. 

And of course Pete deserves the credit for uncovering this issue in the first place.

Piaggio and/or Moto Guzzi paid attention to someone. As they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease! If no one had complained, nothing would have been done.

I don't know, of course, but I am guessing that Piaggio made this decision since they are opening the flood gates to repairing all of the flat tappet motors at corporate expense, at least in the US.

The mods who could have deleted a lot of posts that brought attention to the problem but didn't.

To Pete who through great expense of time and effort got to the bottom of why and what was happening.

And the Griso owner who persevered , rode the hard ride and stuck to his guns and pushed until the wall gave.

And to a fine dealer who didn't shine on a complaining owner but did the right thing, making a customer for life no doubt instead of just taking their money.

Those are the people who deserve credit, they were all selfless in supporting Moto Guzzi owners.

having a documented precedent is a huge step toward instituting a universal solution.

If product customers don't complain, NHTSA have no idea there is an issue.  This isn't the 1st time something like this has happened.  MG had to recall a bunch of hydraulic head issues not too many years ago on Tonti models.  Also on single plate clutches on some spine frame models.  Squeaky wheel get's the grease, thank goodness.    Just too bad these things happen.

The hydraulic tappet issue and the single plate clutch issue were NOT recalls. Just manufacturers campaigns, or whatever the term is. If you buy a bike today with those failed parts in them, you are on your own.

Which also is a good indication that IF you have an affected model, get the parts replaced ASAP even if it hasn't failed yet. In a few years they parts will be gone, and Piaggio will tell you to take a leap.

After reading this thread a few days ago I decided to call the closest MG dealer to me in upstate NY to ask him about Piaggio's position on the tappet wear, since I have a 2011 Stelvio. He called the NA Piaggio office and spoke with their management. He said that Piaggio told him that there is no recall, no technical bulletin nor any notice related to this issue. But they are aware of it and told him that the bike should be brought in to a MG dealership to inspect the tappets for wear at around 5,000 - 7,000 miles on the odo. If wear is observed it is to be documented and photographed, and Piaggio will pay for parts and labor minus about $200. Piaggio is having training for dealer technicians to do the inspection and rollerisation. They told me after 30 days when their techs have been trained to bring the bike in.

The only thing is, my bike has 3500 miles on it, and I plan on bringing it in at the recommended 5,000 mile point. If there's no wear then I pay for the labor! At that point, I might as well just have the job done and pay for the kit. He is getting back to me later on an estimate for labor + parts. Anyone that has paid for the job have any $ figures?

We made the 1st Tech Bulletin in 09 here in ATL for instructions, same procedure, shop time was 1 1/2hr on ea side. Looked up shop time for changing tappets on Saturday, it was 280 minutes.
 
For reference have your dealer look up Tech Bulletin # 006-2014 & # 002-2014 if he says nothing is going on. Bulletin for "A" kit is from 2013

Looks like AF1 has parts listed as a kit  "B"kit= $1071.80 ,  "C"kit= $1485.12 , "D"kit= N/A
