'13 v7 throttle cables
« on: September 02, 2015, 09:58:33 AM »
Hi All,

My name is AJ - i've been lurking around here for weeks but this is my first post.

I picked up a '13 v7 Special in late July (my first motorcycle) and I've had a few issues to tackle, most due to lack of proper maintenance.  I got all the maintenance caught up, then not 24 hrs after I did the last bit (valve adjustment) the return throttle cable broke as I pulled out of a parking lot.  I was lucky enough to be close to a new bike shop that opened up so I idled it over a few blocks, but now I'm totally down and can't get parts for another week.

Does anyone happen to have spare throttle cables that I could buy or any leads to how I might be able to get some overnighted?  I have an order w/AF1 but unfortunately they didn't have them in stock and can't expedite them from the factory.  I tried Harpers, MG Cycle, Pro Italia, Guzzitech and all dealers in the NY/NJ/PA area.

Have you tried calling:

MPH in Houston - 281-647-6557

or

AF1 in San Antonio and New Braunfels -

Phone: 830-626-3966
Toll-free: 877-626-3966

They are also good sources and MIGHT have it.

Worth a try at least.

On my older BMW airheads I've had good luck with making my own throttle cables from bicycle BRAKE cables, both cable and sheath.  The cables are nylon covered, the sheath is plastic lined and needs no lubrication.  There are brass ends available that must be soldered to the cables.  You have to measure, pick the ends and solder them on.  After I made these cables I had no problems for years, sold the bikes with them.  Jurgen

Moto International in Seattle is another prime source, as is Riders Hill in Georgia.

Thanks for the help all.

I've got an order in with AF1 but it will be a few more days before I see the parts.  I'm waiting for a call back from MPH in Houston, no luck with any of the others.

Jurgen, I'll have to practice making cables, I might visit the cycle shop near me and see if they could help.  Losing the bike for 2 weeks is no fun.

The fact that this rider has followed up on so many possible avenues for something as simple as a cable with no joy is disturbing. I can give you 5 phone #'s for shops that can supply you with all the cables you would ever need for a T 120 Bonneville, a bike built 45 yrs. ago. MG and it's dealers have got to do better than this.

Definitely frustrating - I called Piaggio and they were not at all helpful.  There is no way to expedite orders from their warehouse(!?).  What if I was on a road trip, they would leave me stranded?

Good news, throttle cables due in today!  AF1 guys really took care of me.

btw, MPH Cycles in Houston will be stocking these if anyone needs them.  I'll probably keep a spare set along with a clutch cable, just in case.
