Steel Timing gears for Norge 2V
« on: March 03, 2015, 08:41:45 PM »
Looking at fitting steel timing gears to my Norge 1200 2V to replace the timing chain setup.

It's possible that aftermarket (steel) timing gears designed for the Sport 1100i will fit onto later 1100 and 1200 2V engines like the Breva, Norge and Griso.

I need to know whether the centre distances of the cam, crank and oil pump shafts of the Norge / Breva 2V engines the same as the earlier big block engines like the Sport 1100 carb and Sport 1100i ?    All other dimensions are looking promising.

I'd be surprised if the crank - cam centre has changed over the years but perhaps the crank - oil pump shaft centre distance has changed due to different oil pump designs.  Gear vs. Trochoidal pump, for example.

Comment or advice welcomed.

John.

The only aftermarket steel gears I know of are those made by Joe Carusoe (Sp?) in the UK. AFAIK a he has run out and I was told by a mate who bought what he said were the 'Last Set' that Joe had no plans to make any more but not that this is hearsay.

The earlier sets from the Hi-Cam motors won't work and the oil pump gear is alloy and fracture prone.

I know some people disagree but I believe the chain and sprocket system, with a decent tensioner, is perfectly serviceable.

The timing gear set up from the 8V won't work either.

Joe Caruso is the after-marketeer with whom I'm corresponding.    He is planning to have more timing gears made for the Sport 1100s.    It seems that the Sport 1100i timing setup is very similar to the A2 Norge 2V motors.  Phonic wheel, sprockets, chain are the same part numbers, as far as I've been able to determine.   The oil pump shaft diameter is the same for both motors.

If the oil pump shaft is in the correct position, then it *should* be a reasonably straightforward fit-up using the Sport 1100i gearset.    Otherwise, a suitable gear for Norge 2V oil pump would need to be fabricated, to account for a different centre distance, something which Joe hasn't had call to do yet.

Yes, if it all gets too hard, I'll just replace with standard chain / sprockets.  It's just that the chain is coming up for renewal.   A friend also had to replace sprockets due to them becoming slightly out of round and varying the chain tension.

Appreciate the reply and advice, Pete.

Centre distances are the same. The trochoidal pump was moved compared to a V11 type but it's on the same radius. I have pictures if you want to message me.
