When checking your oil on the cali 1400. I know to worm it up first. Stand the bike up straight. After pulling the stick and wiping it do you
insert it to the threads or do you screw it back in before pulling it for a read?

Just set it in on threads, no screwing in needed.

And of course once you have done it once, inconveniently straddling the bike and groping about, and got it to the correct level, (About half way between the 'Full' and 'Add' marks.) you can put it on its side stand and check it there, memorise where the oil is on the stick and know that for all future checks that is the correct level so you don't have to fart about with the stupid 'Stand the bike upright' nonsense!

Are you saying when upright it should only be between the marks and not to the top line?

Yup, unless you want it to blow some out into the airbox. The 'Full' mark is generally too much, (It depends on a lot of factors). Generally if you fill to the top of the stick you'll loose some until the level reaches a certain point and then it'll slow down or stop using/loosing it completely. That point is your 'Happy Place' and it's usually about half way between the marks on the stick. Fill it beyond that and it'll just keep blowin' it out through the breather system.
There's lots in there. You don't need to worry about it making the 'Dogga-Dogga' noise. Just don't let it drop below the 'Add' mark.

Thanks for the advise, I put in the listed amount and am a bit above the top line. Time to extract a bit.
