01 California EV tranny question
« on: March 17, 2015, 06:29:12 AM »
I need to pull the rear cover off my tranny and replace all of the O rings and gasket.  I am leaking around the shifter shaft.  Will I need an old clutch disk to hold the input shaft in order to remove the nut on the rear shaft?  Does anyone have an old one to sell me to fabricate a tool from?  Any words of advice?
Thanks to all.

If it's leaking from the shifter shaft first remove and blow out the breather fitting and hose from the back of the box to make sure it is clear and the hose is not kinked. If the box is pressurising it will push oil past the o-ring on the pawl shaft.

Secondly unless you really want to take the box out you can try the old trick of using another o-ring lightly crushed between the actuating arm on the back of the box and the case over the pawl shaft. Quite often this will dissuade unsightly leaks from getting too intrusive.

Pete,
I have checked the vent hose and it is clear.  I did notice however that the PO has replaced and rerouted the hose to the frame rail beneath the seat.  Regarding your suggestion about the O ring - are you talking about packing one in from the outside of the box?  I may try that.

If you are good (masochist), the rear cover can be removed and reinstalled without removing the output shaft nut. It requires a bunch of tranny shafts to come out with the cover. Me I had a tool made from a 27mm socket. Had the ratchet end cut off (so it was the 27mm hex all the way through. Then had a handle welded on. That way I can hold the output shaft with the forward yoke from an old dead u-joint, and loosen the nut (after bending back the bendy tab). Watch the speedo drive ball bearing and 2 hardened washers that sandwich the small (output) speedo drive gear.

Yes. It's a bit of a kludge but it does work. Not always, but neither does replacing the internal ring always. It would be IMHO, worth trying before you pull the box unless you want to go in for some reason.
