Ultimate Road Trip? RIDE your Guzzi to Europe.
« on: March 27, 2015, 05:12:10 PM »
It's not possible yet, but will be if one Russian Official gets his way: http://www.cnn.com/2015/03/24/travel/trans-siberian-road/

I don't see this happening any time soon, but man I'd love to do it.

Then again, when I was watching Predator I didn't think two members of its cast would become governors, either. So you never know.

Not only gets his way but gets about 100 trillion rubles ......

Maybe our grandchildren will be talking about it someday.

Can you imagine the crime problems on a stretch of Siberian road 1000 miles from the nearest police post?   You'd be stopping so often for Russian mobsters holding out their hands for "safe passage" that it would take 3 years to get there!

Perhaps when the world changes .....

They've been bringing this up for decades, yet every time Alaska tries to build a bridge someone calls it " The Bridge to Nowhere" and all funds get squashed.
Only one electoral vote sucks.

Well, they have a point.

It would BE a Bridge to Nowhere.    That might not keep it from being funded, though, "patronage" being what it is ....

That was Sarah's tradeoff for her VP nomination.  She tossed Ketchikan under the bus and redirected the bridge money (much was already spent and materials were being stockpiled waiting for construction season) to pay for Katrina damage in New Orleans.  The bridge didn't happen.  The materials were ruined.  It cost the state many millions, and KTN international airport remains the only US international airport that you can't drive to.

No, Lannis.  They do not have a point-- unless that point is that Alaska is a second-class colony to be exploited.  Alaska deserves a transportation infrastructure, the same as you do.  As it is, our fuel taxes pay for YOUR road improvements -- Alaskans don't get back what they pay in gas tax simply because we're not on an interstate system.  It's pure taxation without representation. While some urban area in Virginia gets an 8th lane of interstate, we get to walk.  In the rare cases when the fed throws us a bone, the classy thing to do would be to let us gnaw it.  Telling us we don't deserve roads because they don't really go anywhere is sheer jackassery.

In reality, there is already a road from Siberia to Alaska.  It's travelled extensively and drives both borders nuts.  Like a lot of roads up here it's best used in the winter.

Some truth in that .... Blacksburg, VA (university town and center of a lot of power) got a huge roadbuilding program with huge 6-lane interstate feeders approved just a few years back to reduce congestion on Big Game days when all the alumni came to town.

"Road to Nowhere" was another way of saying "Road to Siberia".   If that's actually "somewhere", then so be it ....

True.   If there were some economic basis justifying it, it would probably get built.

But I don't think anyone's going to spend five hundred billion dollars building a bridge just because it's sort of a neat idea and we could maybe have a road trip and take pictures of ourselves with the cute Siberian girl at the Yakutsk truck stop ....

Not really.  The plans I saw being circulated 10 or 15 years ago called for the bridge to have Highway, Rail, and Pipeline.

That makes it much more viable for commerce than if it was simply a highway bridge.

Personally, I can't see the bridge ever getting built.  We just don't have a stable enough relationship with Russia.

Why would be want to have a highway and rail link that would allow easy access for invaders from Asia?

Russians don't need a bridge, they have already established many communities in Alaska and the Northwest. Not to mention New York. So many have left Russia Putin even offered $75 K a head to anyone that returns.

I would pay double in taxes to watch the fighter jets out of Elmendorf AFB take out a 50 mile bridge loaded with tanks.
