Cali 1100i rev counter repair ???
« on: April 10, 2015, 05:39:48 AM »
hi all,

After owning my Cali for 18 months I finally decided to try fixing the busted rev counter.

The coil was open circuit so I substituted a panel meter to make sure the electrics were ok, which they are. After much very delicate micro surgery (the wire is super fine 3 strand) I have managed to join then up again and now measure 160 ohms across and .099volts on diode test it, rotates about 10 degrees on the latter.

There doesn't seem to be a protection diode across the coil so am thinking of putting one in as I suspect the wire may have fused rather than broken with vibration.

Any ideas on best way forward ? I plan to fire it up this weekend and see what voltage is at high revs
then put a diode or two across the coil.
Cheers
KiwiKev

No help here but I'm watching since mine has been broken for a few years.

I'm lost.
My Cali 1100 had 12 volt pulses coming to it at the rate of the coils. Then electronics inside the tach convert the pulses to a few AVERAGE milliamps to operate the coil. The electronics board in there wouldn't allow any excess current to the meter movement.
In fact if it is a PWM type drive, all you might accomplish is screwing up the reading, and toasting the electronics.

Good point thanks Wayne, I should quit while I'm ahead maybe. :-)

Been fun fixing it, just hope it lasts more than ten minutes..

Yeh it's a challenge but good fun trying. first thing is to measure the coil resistance I reckon. Have seen mention of springs coming unstuck but mine were fine.

Mine reads around 160 ohms now although there are 3 super fine strands so would be interested to know if anyone knows if this is about right.

Not about to try soldering it again though, it's a pig of a job..

Hi Wayne,

I took your & my bro (Kiwi Roy) advice and reassembled it today with no further design improvements :-) ..

It works fine now, just did a short test ride down the street & will enjoy watching it on the way to work tomorrow. I will probably end up in the ditch as I will be eyeballing the rev counter - lol.

Cheers,

Kevin
