crankshaft endfloat for T3, anyone?
« on: April 25, 2015, 07:54:26 PM »
I've had a little noise coming from the front of the engine on my T3. Even the slightest pull on the clutch lever changes the sound, so it seems to be clutch or crankshaft end float related. I just pulled the timing cover off, and I measured the end float with a feeler gauge between the front main bearing and the rear of the crankshaft sprocket. An .005 feeler gauge slides right in, and I can wiggle an .006" in there with a little effort. The numbers don't sound like much, but there is an audible thunk when I pull the clutch lever, if first I push the snout of the crank aft. I can't seem to find a spec for it. Anyone here know anything about this? Thanks

Well I don't think that the clearance that you are measuring there is alarming...  there needs to be some clearance between the cover and the inside of that gear/sprocket.  I am thinking that the gear has a shouldered stop that determines that clearance.

I just don't know if that can be classified as crankshaft float either, the end play on the crank assembly is between the crank web and the inside measurement of the crankcase.  There are specs for that however, I will not be near a tech manual until I get home next week jabber...

I assume also that the noise happens when the engine is running...?  The clutch assembly does make some collective component sounds, not alarming but noises.  A clunk can be heard/felt from the clutch push rod and the plates separating, the cup in the flywheel... noises.

clutch spline wear?  The T-3 had the old 2mm splines that were very prone to wear.

I didn't feel like the .005-.006" clearance was out of line either, that's just what I got. The noise I have is not very bad anyway, and it kind of comes and goes. It started when I swapped bikes with a friend during a ride. When I got it back, it was making a new noise, and at the time it seemed quite loud, and as soon as I got it home, I crabbed the frame and pulled out the gearbox and clutch, and found NOTHING! I put it back together, and the noise was still there, but then in very few miles, it went away about 90 percent. Very mysterious, but I just accepted it. That was all late last summer. I've put about 200 miles on it this spring, and last night I pulled the front end of the engine apart to install some timing gears I traded for on here, and was just looking at things before they came apart, hoping for some clue as to what might have been the cause of the noises.

Five/six thou on an ancient shitter like a T3 is outstanding.

End float is governed by the machining of the front main journal and the depth of the bearing flange. It's non adjustable without a grinder which is why no specs for end float are published. It is very, very rare for there to be an end float issue.

Any weird noises are much likely to be from elsewhere.
