WSBK advice
« on: May 23, 2015, 12:40:41 PM »
I'm planning to travel from Whitehorse to Laguna Seca for the July WSBK. Use my Norge for what it's meant for. Meeting my friend in Vancouver who is on a Ducati 848 Corse SE. We are taking US 101 down the coast.  Neither of us has been to a motorcycle race before, so what tips has this community got for us? Parking, camping, motels etc. We want to avoid the loud party crowd, being non drinkers. How far out of Salinas do we need to be to avoid the masses? Is buying the Ducati Island pass worth it? Best spot to watch the races? Any info would be helpful.

Don't park on the racetrack and pot is still illegal in California.

That's all I've got.

If you don't already have hotel reservations, you'll probably be looking at this for lodging!

The crowds at WSBK are a LOT less than they were when MotoGP was here.  The crowd rowdiness is also diminished.  I've had the same reserved campsite for years.  Unless you are really a Ducati fanatic, the Ducati Island thing isn't worth it.  Depending on what my kids decide to do, you may be able to park or even camp at my site.  Those decisions will have to be last minute, so have another plan on hand.  The free-range motorcycle camping is a bit awkward.  Mostly it is precariously on the side of Fox Hill.  Formal campsites are not cheap.  But, they are level and they do have a picnic table and easy access to portable toilets.  You would likely have to retreat all the way to Salinas to get a motel and the cheap ones will already be gone.  Stay in touch.  I'll PM my phone number and campsite number.  Last year there were numerous empty campsites around me.  Do you already have entry and camping tickets?  Yes, you should go down to the Cannery Row deal in Monterey.

Been going to these events for years...for accommodations: you can either look up places in seaside or salinas for hotels/motels (prices will be hiked up because of the race event and limited so I suggest you book something very soon) I'm not sure if camping is still available but you could look that up on the raceway site as well as motorcycle parking and tickets with paddock passes. I don't usually get the Ducati island pass (just more $$$ to spend, not worth it) Your friend who is on the Ducati just needs to present his registration at ducati island and he gets a special arm band and he can sponsor you as his guest, so you get one too. This gives you access to free bottled water, espresso and snacks through out the day. Also a place to sit and take a break between the times you're roaming the track and checking out the sites.

Cannery Row: you guys should check that out as mentioned by Dusty and Patrick. On Saturday night they close the street off to only motorcycles. You get to ride through there and park. Kind of like a big block party with all types of motos. There is also a specific area near Bubba Gumps on cannery row where certain modified bikes are there on display.

Hope this info helps. Have fun on your ride to the event and Enjoy!
