Author Topic: So I bit the bullet and ordered Denali D2's for the Stelvio NTX  (Read 3661 times)

So after purchasing the bike last september, I swapped out the factory Aux lights for some cheapo floods from Amazon.
they worked great!
Unfortunately a couple weeks ago the vibrations broke both mounts for the lights.
So I had our sheet metal shop fab up some 1/8" SS mounts from one of the broken ones.
They unfortunately didn't get the dimension quite right so I tried modifying the lights as I was going to Rich's Custom Seat the following day.
That didn't pan out..

So frankly I am done with mounting aux lights back in the factory position.
I ordered up some Denali D2's, with both the fender mount kit and also the off set mount kit.
Should have the stuff next week and I'll mount the following weekend.

I am hoping to use the off set kit and mount either to the 4 M5's at the bottom of the chin fairing (it appears the inside two closest to the motor have their female nuts welded to the front fairing subframe) or to mount off the lower allen screws of the lower fork triple tree.
Option 2 will be mounting on the fender.
I am hoping option 1 works as they'll be more protected in case of a fall and thinking a little higher up to give more line of sight adjust ability.

Going to just wire in the D2's in either case to the aux switch on the throttle grip housing and go full bright.

The final thing will be putting high way pegs on the old factory aux light position.
Those are coming as well this Saturday and I'll mount them up.

So I am hoping that I can finally get this monkey off my back.
It ain't cheap to do all of this, but I am hoping this solves the aux light problem and also gives me the highway peg option..

I'll let you guys know when its all done.

Andrew.

Like my D2's - you are right in the factory position they still break brackets eventually

Full bright, using factory switches works great - just cut the pigtail from the factory lights and used them

Where did you mount them?  I assume you're on a stelvio?

You should be happy with the D2s - I am with mine. Mounted on the 1100 Sport on the mirror mounts, and on the forks above the lower fork yoke on the V7C. Both linked into high beam.

The Denali D2 produces about 725 raw lumens of light each on 10 watts. They cost a little more than the Rigid D2 HD vibration-mount lamps that produce about 3100 lumens of light each on 35 watts.

The Denali D2's are compact and provide good conspicuity. Hope they work out well for you.

So, why is the stock mounting point so bad on the Stelvio?  I see a lot of folks who mount those lights on the lower fork legs where they only have the tire for 'cushioning'.  If they survive that why won't they survive a mount point on the sprung portion of the bike?

The only thing that I can think of would be the unusual vibration that the stock engine-guard mounting locations seem to attract. It is the cause of the internal wiring shorts of the stock NTX lamps (and blowing The Big Fuse).

Tightening down the attachment fasteners of the guard bars seemed to help mine.

Position-wise, the engine guard locations seem fine to me. As everyone has heard, probably too often, I'm using the Rigid D2 HD lamps with the vibration-absorbing mounts. No problems.
