New V11 Cafe
« on: June 04, 2015, 07:24:23 PM »
So I picked up this bad boy a few weeks ago in Battle Creek, and not much has gone smoothly getting it done. Oil filter was practically glued into place, dash light bulb holders shorted out on me, a few brake pistons not moving, and so on.

This bike was in storage for about 5 years, and was much dirtier than it appeared once I started taking parts off. Normally, I don't name bikes, but "Dirty Bear" seems to fit well.

Phase 1 is complete, and I will be starting on phase 2 when I have time and the weather is bad. That will include new rear wheel bearings, swing arm removal for bearing grease, and greasing of driveshaft splines.

I've done so much to this bike, that I can't even keep track of it anymore. This bike runs way stronger, and much smoother than my 2001 V11S.

Here's all of the pics I have so far on photo bucket, if anyone wants to scroll through them.

Sweet ride! did you change the headlight ears, or is it just the angle of the second pic that makes the bucket look so much tighter?? I assume you are going to leave it naked?

I changed the headlight ears from those off of a 2001 V11S. I also have the big 8" headlight from the V11S on there. Pics are in the photo bucket link. I do have a small fairing from a V11 that I plan on putting on after I repaint it as 80MPH freeway rides aren't pleasant on my 35 mile ride to work without a fairing.

I might have dash light holders and other instrument pieces if you need them or is it fixed already?

BMW R90S fairing fits well and works well to keep the wind  down a bit.  With the S fairing, you still get helmet wind, but reduced wind on the torso.

Thanks, but I'm going with LED's for now. Believe it or not, the odometer doesn't work on the bike, so I'll be replacing that soon.

If you're interested in selling the headlight ears, I'd be interested.  I need to cut a pair down to fit the LeMans fairing to my V11 Sport.

Nice find Ken, that cleaned up real nice. I've been watching CL, didn't see that one pop up.

You mean this fairing? I should probably leave it on the bike it's on.

On the motor, I used S100 aerosol cleaner: http://www.s100.com/s100_tcc.htm
On the exterior frame and wiring, I sprayed Windex on a cotton cloth, and wiped down the parts. On internal connections, I use denatured alcohol on a cotton swab (a tip I learned from our electronics tech at work), and petroleum jelly to keep corrosion away in the future (a tip from Kiwi Roy). Do not douse the connections with any harsh chemicals. When cleaning these, I used natured alcohol for my own internal connections. I think it was Sam Adams that night.
