2001 V11 Sport tach - new tach, way off
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:19:08 PM »
just bought a new tach from Harpers for my 2001 V11 sport. The old one would read over 5000 revs. The new one had the. Exact same wiring, connections, etc. in easily, all hooked up. However, the new tach reads 4000 rev idle! It won't go below 4000. It is a Veglia white face with a orange needle (the old tach has a white needle). Harpers parts said it was the right one for my V11. Do I have to do anything more than plugging it in??

You shouldn't. I would contact Curtis and get his thoughts. Perhaps the replacement is defective.

Or you got one for a different ecu? same redline? Are there numbers on both?

The needle on your old one used to be orange, too.

I didn't think the OEM ones required setting but it sounds like it's set incorrectly, ie if a tach has a 1/2/3/4 etc cylinder setting (pulses per revolution) this may need changing.

The late V11's took the signal from the ecu rather than the coils, not sure about yours.

If full scale was off it might be set for the wrong number of cylinders or signal source (coil input or computer) but idle should be around 1K or close regardless.
Does it go to zero with the motor not running?

Thanks for the inputs - tach went back to Harpers after talking to Robert. He will test it and see if we can swap it for a Rosso tach - they will work with me

I replaced a tach on an early (15M) ecu bike that needed some resistor across two of the posts to get it to settle it down.  I don't remember the exact symptoms or ohm values or posts though.  I believe it was someone here that gave me the information (it's been years . . .).   Just throwing it out there in case it jogs someone's memory.  I have no idea if this applies to your bike or not.

Update - Harpers had no luck with the tach; refunded my money and gave me the address of paspeedo. Called them and sent the tach. Helmuth(?) said he would bench test my old tach and call, estimated around $250 to repair - cheaper than a new tach. Waiting to hear.
