vertical tab on steering neck , early Tonti frame
« on: June 06, 2015, 10:43:14 AM »
Just curious. what does the vertical tab welded vertically at the lower front of the steering neck  with what seems like a 8mm hole  of the steering neck do?  Only have seen on a V7 sport frame, but there was nothing bolted to it? Any clues?

Isn't that the stop to prevent overturning the front wheel?

Not near my EV just now, but believe there are bump-outs on the lower triple tree that mate with that piece.

I also recall someone telling me that's how to ID whether a Cali (and possibly other models and makes) that have allegedly "never been down" actually have, as the soft aluminum is pushed out of shape a bit.

Smarter folks than I may chime in with the real answer soon, but for now, mine'll have to do.

Best,

Bill

I always thought it was there as a fairing mount or for the factory to hang the frame by. <shrug>

I'd have to look back at my pictures, its been so long since I took my T apart, but It might have had a brake manifold mounted there to allow connecting the front brake pressure switch.

It might be a good place to connect ground for anything that rotates with the triple tree?

It is probably where you screw in the shackle for the tow chain.
Personally I would prefer to have it pushed.

It's a mounting point for a frame-mounted fairing, used on for instance the Le Mans 1000 CI. See http://www.vintagemotorcyclesonline.com/zenphoto/albums/misc/LM10001.JPG

The tab was on the V7 Sport frame, the first of the Tonti's long before a fairing was part of the package

Maybe the designers were thinking ahead to when new bikes would come with a fairing or maybe it was just a pace to hand the frames during painting.

Forward roundtoit? I need to get one.... I dunno, fairing mounts noted above sound right.

What I really take from the photo? Those are some outrighteously beautiful triple clamps. Nearly organic looking.

Yeah, it's on my 74 Tonti. It's there for the convenience of customers and dealers and racers who might want to mount an aftermarket fairing.

90 California full faring have a similar but crude looking tab for mounting the faring. Never seen on any of my Tonti frame bikes 76 or up other than the Cal 3FF.
