We all really appreciate your postings. As you know Ruth and I are planning to go to Scotland, hopefully not too long in the future and your pictures and posting are both helpful and motivational.

It's funny; generally guys from those islands talk about how crowded it all is, so many people in such a small area, sounds like living in Houston or Northern Virginia.

But whenever I go over there, I'm amazed by how much open space there is.   We were riding in Yorkshire around the moors and dales, and you can see for a long way and see nothing but the occasional cottage ....

I'm sure Oz has tons of open space, probably more uninhabited area than the American West.   The "open space" in Yorkshire is only big by contrast with what I'd heard about crowded, small island ....

Fay and I spent a couple days walking around Kent, which is considered to be very crowded and suburban by the Northerners there.    We stayed in a bed-and-breakfast near Sittingbourne (formerly an old hop farm) and walked on all the pathways and rights-of-way that have been there since Roman times, some of them.   Walked up on a Saxon church from 1054, exactly 900 years B.L. (before Lannis).   We'd walk for miles and hardly see anyone.   I will say that every square foot of the land was under cultivation or preserved in some way, pheasants flushing from under our feet, or well kept woods.

But you got a real sense of peacefulness and isolation, not a sense of crowded hubbub ...

We got off the Irish Sea ferry on another trip, and rode a few hours to Clay Bank in Yorkshire, where there's a nice view.   I saw something sparkly in the open and empty distance - "What's that shining over there?" queried I.   "Oh, that's Teeside, the Tee River estuary."  "You mean estuary like where it goes into the North Sea?   We've crossed the country ALREADY?"  And so we had.

The first photo is fairly typical of the roads I use on a regular basis in the east midlands area at this time of year.

I've been back for a couple of days (nearly four weeks away) and I'm just getting started at sorting through 1,700 photographs (and getting the time-zone buzz out of my head).

On second look, that "English" photograph is actually just across the border, and is in Wales.  But, here's one that is most definitely in England, taken some miles to the east of that other one:
