Check your battery cables
« on: June 14, 2015, 07:21:18 AM »
Was at my dealer sat am and when I was about to leave, the bike wouldnt start. Granted, my battery is 4 yrs old but once jumped, the bikes computer listed a battery reading of 13.7. Got home and the negative cable was finger tight. For some reason MG batteries seem to get loose more so than other bikes Ive had.

I've found this to be true as well. Not sure why since the bike (CalVin) is not vibration prone to any great extent, but other machines I've ridden were and had no tendency to loosen cables. No matter...a simple check now and then ensures contact. Just another alluring "feature"!

My new V7C with its original battery had the same problem with self loosening battery terminals.

The problem was caused by the stainless steel washers used on the terminals - The ones that came with my bike were too slippery, too hard, I think, for the purpose. I keep tightening them until I replaced the battery with a AGM type and without using any washers. Been ok since then.

I'm just curious -- did the dealer jump the bike for you?

The kid needs a stern talking to.  NOBODY sends a bike out into the unknown with a jump start and no investigation into why it needed the jump start.  He should have cleaned the battery top and checked cables before ever touching it with the jumpers.

The plot thickens, I landed up getting a new battery as it didnt start the next day after getting gas. I dont know if its in my head, but the bike seems to accelerate faster and is more responsive w/ the new battery.

As with most things, MG, the stock screws and the new ones didnt fit but luckily i was at the dealer and they helped me out with some longer ones.
