Wytheville work trip on the Nero Corsa
« on: July 01, 2015, 12:16:08 PM »
I left northern IL Saturday morning and did 600+ miles to Alcoa, TN. About 9.5 hours. Then thought I would lock the steering for the night at the hotel. Next morning all loaded up and of course, the battery was dead! I didn't realize the second to the last lock position leaves the taillight on!
Gas station right there so I bought a set of jumper cables. Guy on a Victory getting gas reads the situation and told me not to open up the cables. He rode over to my bike and took out a box the size of a smartphone but maybe twice as thick. Plugged in some baby jumper leads to it, connected to my very dead battery and the bike popped right off!
Very cool!
So I did the obligatory Dragon but 5 full times non-stop. Then rode to Franklin, SC on hwy 28 which is always nice. US64 briefly then some small roads into SC and zigzagged there to stay the night in Greenville. Monday, rode out on US178, then NC215 to the Blue Ridge, took that almost to Virginia and mixed it up on some unmarked roads for a bit up to Wytheville. About a 400 mile detour to the job!
I was surprised that I scraped on the Corsa on the Dragon and more surprised it was the head of the muffler clamp on both sides of the bike.
Felt good to put some wear on the tire edges.
A few pics.

Someone had one of these (XP 3 Kit) at the National, they will jump start a bike, car, etc. and charge up a cel phone, etc. On my list to order before the next trip.

PS. I thought you were going to sell that bike. Looks like you are finally bonding with the bike or is that not an accurate assessment?

Only problem is, on that bike, you can't throw sparks from the bags in the Killboy photos ..... !

I learned with my Sport 1100 years ago to rotate the clamps.  You may want to flip the clamp so it's towards the top of the pipe.

Glad to see you travelling on the bike, and getting some Dragon photos with it!   :thumb:

Yeah, already moved the exhaust clamps. Just didn't expect the bike to lean enough for them to hit the pavement!

If you are exploring in the area, check route 666. I keep seeing the sign for that from I-81 but never have time to explore when I pass through Wytheville. I'm thinking north of I-81 it may turn to gravel.

I have one of those anti gravity jump starts. They're about $100 shipped, and within the first week, I jump started my friends Suzuki GS850, some girls 6 cyl. Mazda, and my riding mower. Well worth the money!
Glad you got going ok. Not fun trying to push start these bikes...

Glad you had fun in my stomping grounds.  I actually have yet to take my new bike over the Dragon.  Just been so busy.

178 is also a great road.  There are so many super roads in the area.  Even I26 N to Johnson City is spectacular - I watched that one being built, lots of amazing geology and engineering!

I live about 13 miles from Alcoa - pretty close.  And we were on 129 briefly today.  Small world.

I did order one of those mini jump starters. Should be at the house when I get home tomorrow afternoon.
666 is ok, not as cool as some of the roads Wayne has suggested out where he is from.
Yeah, what I like about this bike is that it is very predictable. I can do well on my T but once in a while, I will get a pucker moment. This bike does what you ask it to every time, no surprises!
Tomorrow will be 680 miles to home, see how the old body holds up in that low down position!

Hope you missed the Cyanide chem spill in Maryville.

Only a few miles from my house.  If I'd gone left instead of right to do my errands I'd have figured out something was going on.  Those tracks don't look in super shape, but I've never seen a train going very fast through there.  Hard to figure what could have gone wrong.  It's right near Smoky Mountain Harley Davidson.  Heading that way in the morning, think I'll take the country road bypass, just in case!
