Transponder Key Number for a 1200 Sport? - Help
« on: July 11, 2015, 09:18:23 AM »
I bought 2 extra Moto Guzzi transponder keys for my '08 1200 Sport. Took one to a locksmith and had one cut today for $35.

It goes into the ignition and can be turned clockwise. But it asks for a 5-digit code. I tried the 5-digit diagnostic code but that says it's incorrect.

Does anyone know the code for a 1200 Sport or know where to find it? I contacted my Guzzi dealer from whom I bought the keys and he said he would look into it Monday.  Any help?

I had to get a salvaged dash from the fine folks at MotoInternational.  It works & here's the key code suggestion they provided.  That also worked.

I'll say it again - MotoInt'l saved my hiney!

"...I suggest we sell you the dash and you try it out. If it doesn’t work we can refund you but chances are this one is working fine. Key reprogramming code on this on should be 00000. "

If you still have the two original keys.

You can reset the PIN in the MENU.

After selected the option, you will asked to remove the first original key and insert the second original key.

Follow the screen instructions and enter a new PIN.

Use the new PIN to program the new keys that you have.

In which case I'm afraid you're stuffed I think. To be able to programme new keys you need to know the code or to use the code recovery function you'll need two active keys.

The way forward from here is to find a locksmith who can clone your new keys from the original one.

Reminds me of when I purchased my first BMW in 1985.  I was so proud of my K100Rs (and so protective), I asked the dealer how best to protect the bike from theft.  After a brief chuckle, Gary said "Bob, nobody steals BMWs."  I would imagine the same holds true today for Moto Guzzis.  It might be nice if the default was 'no protection' re key code.  I mean, really ......why?

I can understand that setting a new code in the dash needs the old. But there is a function too, to learn new keys, had no problem with that on a new dash, but maybe only because the code wasn't set? Some dealers use  last part of VIN for the code, maybe engine number? You got nothing with the bike? You know where you bought it, can't you get number from PO?

That is how I had a copy made for the Norge. I sent him a original key with a new blank and I believe he charged me $35 bucks.

Took my one and only key to the best locksmith in town and asked him to try and "clone" it. It did not work. It still wants me to enter the 5-digit code, which I don't know.

Does it do it with both keys or only the cloned one?

Have you only tried the zeroes as the code?

There have been a few threads on similar topics, the common codes are the zeroes (for those who haven't set their own code), the service code (my 1200 Sport is 36421) or else the last 5 numbers of the VIN.

Contact the previous owner and ask if they know the PIN?

I was being a bum and didn't reset my PIN number, I almost lost one of the keys and that scare kickstarted my ass into gear and I got it done. You need to know that PIN!

I sent the key to Jim at AL&K:

And the new key didn't require me to enter a code to work if my memory is correct. Call Jim up and talk to him, very nice guy.

I think that is because they clone the chip of the new key to your working original key.

If one buy a spare Guzzi key blank, it will need the PIN to program the new key after cutting the key profiles in order for the dash/antenna to recognise the new key.

Try last 5 digits of the vin...Local dealer sets them to that during pdp
