Ratio adapter source
« on: July 25, 2015, 08:09:55 AM »
A friend of mine and I have been working on a fellow's Pulse which is a motorcycle powered vehicle. One of the changes we made was to install new Honda gauges. It has a 13 inch front wheel with a mechanical speedo gear attached to it and a cable going to the dash. The Honda gauges are calibrated for 19 inch wheels so we need to get an adapter to change the ratio for the gauge to display the correct speed.

I've done an Internet search and called 2 outfits. One didn't answer and the other has not returned my calls. So I'm trying tapping into this list's wisdom for ideas and thoughts about solving this problem.

Any ideas appreciated...

We had thought about that but want to use the Honda gauge.

I would get out a GPS unit and see where you are with what you have.  Other size wheels should have different ratio drives.  You just have to figure out what you are looking for.  Mike

Local to Phoenix - or maybe even if not - I've had great luck with "Dick's Speed-o-Tach on conversions.

Thanks Todd, I'll give Dick's a call. I really want the owner of this vehicle to be able to use the speedometer.

Wheel size is not the factor to consider, overall diameter is what matters andmay already be close.

If that''s a fairly late model electronic gauge the speedo data is usually programmed into the Pcm. Most can be reprogrammed with the tire size and gear ratio. Is the vehicle you're working on electronically controlled Eli?

The vehicle has a mechanical speedo from a 1978 Honda Goldwing. We replaced the existing dash with a complete set of Honda gauges which match the 1000 cc Goldwing engine in it. The front wheel on this vehicle is from a Dodge Omni and has a speedo worm gear which is attached to a cable.

These guys are the "original" and have been better for me for hot-rod, motorcycle and the like one-offs. Current is a '46 Willy's.

These fellas are a spin off with all the usual back story of BF'in and such but are great for standard components using alternate tire diameters.

Best not to engage either about the other.
