Norge sticking solid in gear
« on: August 10, 2015, 06:49:46 AM »
Some members will recall my problem recently with "clutch clatter" on my newly acquired 2012 Norge.  Glad to report that as Vasco DG and others suggested this clatter has greatly diminished with several tuning sessions with my son who owns a 2010 Griso.  Coming as I am off a powerfully fast Honda 1100cc 'Blackbird' I am wondering if the 'sticking' of the gears I am experiencing at times is due to the way I am riding the MG 'Norge'.  Again today my son and I went for a 200km ride through some beautiful twisty country and 3 times the bike just 'stuck' solid in gear under my left boot!  This has happened a number of times before.  I noticed today that each time it happened I was wanting to drop down from (say) 4th to 3rd getting ready for an upcoming bend and the revs were very high.  I did this all the time on the 'Blackbird' ... typically from 3rd to 2nd on that bike.  When my son (with the Griso) has ridden my Norge the gears have never stuck for him.  Am wondering if my old sportsbike riding style is causing my MG to display this problem of the gears sticking solid in one gear without me being able to change?  Admittedly my revs have been right up there on the limit ... is this the problem?  Would appreciate your advice.  Thanks ... Rev

If you are accelerating hard and changing gears quickly are you sure you are allowing the lever to return far enough to index into the next peg in the shift drum?

Yes, thanks Peter.  I suspect it must be something like that, but having ridden for a few years now you tend not to want to accept that it can be something that simple!  As far as the Norge goes and swapping over to Moto Guzzi I am just wrapped!  I have never enjoyed riding as much as I am now.  I am tending to change gears very quickly .. should this be an issue with the Guzzi?  The other thing is that the short section on the gear change lever ... that you pull up with the boot ... I feel is too short for me and I'm thinking to lengthen this by 15mm or so.  Rev

The new 6 speed is pretty darn reliable. It certainly 'sounds' to me that for whatever reason,  :evil: the lever isn't returning to neutral.

I guess that is it and must be something I doing or not doing quite correctly with my "boot"!  Having said that ... the other day I stopped on the roadside at one point having geared down the Norge into first gear.  Having stopped the bike kept wanting to move forward if I released the handbrake ... as with an automatic car.  I had to switch off the ignition and restart in order to get back to the neutral gear position.  Surely this is not normal ... had nothing to do with me not releasing the gear lever properly under my boot or whatever.   Rev

No, it's not. If the clutch is dragging make sure that;

A.) The plunger on the clutch lever that presses on the piston in the master cylinder isn't loose or maladjusted.

B.) The slave cylinder bolts on the back of the box haven't come loose.

My bet is in the plunger.

Thanks Peter, I'll check your suggestions.  Certainly that black cone-shaped plunger at the end of the clutch lever which pushes into the master cylinder is very tightly threaded into the body of the lever ... so much so I can't even turn the thread one bit.  Would that need to be turned outwards or inwards ... I think it's screwed as far in as it will go. But will check the slave cylinder 'bolts' aspect.   Rev
