Steering Damper Question.
« on: November 01, 2015, 07:44:34 PM »
My recently acquired 2002 Scura is being serviced by a Certified BMW/Guzzi mechanic. I asked him to diagnose and repair a funny weaving issue while riding. He initially told me he was going to service and adjust the head bearings. but later called me to tell me my Ohlins Steering Damper was no good and he removed it with great results. told me I didn't need it anymore.

your thoughts on this?

ride it and see.  You can likely get the SD rebuilt.

I have a Gen 1 bike (redframe) and get weave when loaded down with saddle bags.  The newer bikes yours have less aggressive geometry and are considered to be more stable.

The Ohlins dampers are rebuildable.  I would send it in and have it rebuilt.

It's one of those things you don't need, until you do.

The bike should be fine without it, but I kept the dampers on both my spine frame bikes.

A friend had a California with a loose mounting bracket and tight adjustment.  It had a weird weave until I found the loose bracket under the fuel tank.

If you're a hard charger, you might find you would like to have the damper in place in bumpy high-speed sweepers at near the ton.  I've had my Sport 1100 weave a little on occasion.  I don't really ride it like that anymore, though...

I had the Mighty Scura's rebuilt. Wasn't particularly cheap..  but I don't have the ability to do it myself. It's a nice piece of bling..
