condenser question
« on: August 31, 2015, 03:00:53 PM »
I'm trying to sort out the ignition system on my 1959 235 Lodola   My question is are all condenser the same?  I have a 6V system and am not sure if I need a special condenser or would any cheap over the counter condensers work?

Thanks

I'm pretty sure they're all alike. Capacitance should be around .25 to .3 microfarads, and within that range it doesn't much matter. To be on the safe side anything that will fit a Fiat should work  -- Italian farads, you see.

Any automotive condenser will work . They don't care what the voltage is .

yes, they are all about the same. I have used a capacitance meter on many..... V8 condensers are around .19 micro farads, less cylinders around .25. I use the .19 model on two coil twin cylinder Triumph's and Guzzi's with no point life issues.

The real issue isn't 6v vs 12v primary windings -- it's the high voltage output that matters. And that's going to be in the 900v-plus range regardless of battery voltage, so any capacitor works.
