JEEP YJ Wrangler

Okay, boys.  Nothing Guzzi but I recently made an unplanned, unwanted, unexpected acquisition of a 1995 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with the 4L straight 6 motor and 5-speed manual tranny. It was a by-product of me helping someone purchase a new car.  Looks great.

My original intention was to re-sell it and recoup my money but I have to say that I've enjoyed trekking about in the woods with it. It even beats my Stelvio on scrambling about on loose stuff.

Anybody familiar with these?  Any issues?

Engine is bullet proof. Some may say leaf spring front end rides rough, but not that much different than the coil front.
Cheaper to lift, if you go that route, huge supply of aftermarket goodies. Enjoy

But square headlights????

Yes, the YJ series had the square lights.

The aftermarket for accessories etc. for these things is huge too.

Owned a 1990. Built like a truck. Get rid of the thousand miles of vac lines if you can still get it cert'd for road use.
Among other events I used mine to pull stumps on three km of trails I built on the property. Drove it to the Arctic Circle twice and still think it is a better truck in the bush than my Wrangler JK 4door. Don't care for the 15" tires but never felt it was worth the effort to change up because I stick mainly to trails and cut-lines.
If you cut them just right; the little hoop bumperettes will support a jack-all and the spare tire keeps it from bouncing out.

You've got the right motor trans combo.  I had a '91 which was the first year for the 4.0L.  That motor was fantastic; never threw any CEL codes, always had power, and so easy to work on.  The 5spd transmission was great but the clutch gets weak in the 125k to 150k range.

Bought that thing for $3k, put 80k miles on it, and sold it for $3.5k.  And I wish I hadn't sold it!

Dang.

Well, this one has 160k already. Does not burn any of its 6 qts(!) of oil.  Recently had a new clutch installed, new radiator, new rotors and calipers up front and shoes in the rear.

Oh, it has AC too and a new soft top. Last weekend, I did some highway miles with it and it yielded about 20MPG.  I was surprised at that.  I am debating just keeping it.

My problem is that when I have something like this (same with bikes) I end up spending a fortune on tricking it out to my liking and I get under water with it.

I have two other 4WD vehicles but they are larger and not as maneuverable in the woods etc.

 The 5 speed Japanese made transmission, same as used in Toyota trucks, is know for a weak second gear synchronizer. They will tend to grind slightly with high miles. A good quality  GL4 75-90 gear oil, like Redline, improves shift quality. The engines are rugged but will crack a head if seriously overheated.

95 won't have all the vac lines, yours was a 4.3 carb motor, he has a 4.0l fuel inj motor.

it is a great jeep, it will rust to pieces long before it stops running.

Shifts smoothly with no problems.

It was female owned and driven basically all its life.

Sold my 92 Wrangler a few years ago. I6 4.0 5 speed. The wife still has her 92 Cherokee. good vehicles. The leaf spring models feel more solid, handling wise.

I had a very nice 1980 J10 pickup with the six and a four-speed.   GREAT running gear but every piece of trim, door handles, window winders, gauges, heater fans, etc had all packed up and quit way before the running gear failed ....

Oh there might be an intake restrictor between the air cleaner and the intake right at the top of the air cleaner box.  Pops right out.  Good for 10hp or so they say based on the difference in hp ratings between the Cherokee and the YJ.

YJ Fan here. Bought my first 88 YJ in 1993 and kept it for 15 years. Sold it with 240,000 miles, third engine but original Tranny. Amazing since it had the much maligned Peugeot 5 speed. Went Jeepless for a very miserable year and then bought a 2006 TJ but just wasn't the same. One too many airbags.
Last October, i found a 1990 YJ with a little shy of 70K miles. The thing was bone bone stock and rust free. Schleped all the way to Iowa from NJ and tailored it back. Kinda like what I do with bikes but a little larger this time. Now I have YJ again...super happy. As for the TJ...I gave it to the wife. Happy Happy.

I am very impressed with the torque of this straight-six. In the woods in 2nd, it works like an automatic transmission. It pulls from almost stopped on up to too fast.
