Auto Insurance Question(NGC)
« on: September 16, 2015, 06:51:53 AM »
Had a fender bender last Tuesday(first one in 30 years), lady ran a stop sign and I hit her in the side/front, we weren't going very fast as it happened in town...her fault(she admitted to it)...her insurance is State Farm....contacted her local agent the next day and they gave me the list of local approved repair shops and I picked one out and made arrangements with them to do the work once the claim adjuster approved everything.  Problem is, the adjuster hasn't contacted me and according to the local agent hasn't even talked to the lady!  In the mean time I'm driving my Sprinter with a messed up front end(I just sold my back up van a couple weeks ago)that can't be driven at night because of the light and my AC quit working after the accident....is this really typical?  I actually was considering moving my insurance to State Farm but if this is the way they handle things...

In New York state you can get your car fixed at any shop you choose.  I would not use a shop that I did not pick.  You may have to use your insurance to get it fixed right away.  Pay your deductible and then let your insurance get paid and reimburse you for the deductible.  I had a guy run into a one year old car and crunch the front end. His insurance told me I should take what the adjuster offered and not repair the car.  It would not pass inspection and I inquired why I would want to settle for about half of the damages. She said that was all they were going to pay.  Got the car repaired and they paid the whole claim to my insurance co who then paid me back my deductible.  Check how your insurance works where you live and do what is best for you.  Mike

Insurance companies usually aren't in a hurry. Which mean you often need to get a rental vehicle, or at least need it for a longer time. Which in the end they have to pay for. Which in the end costs them more money. Yet they were trying to save money.

As for State farm, I have had very good luck with them on my cars and house.

How insurance companies respond to their customers vs how they pay out to the other party is completely different.

My insurance company paid me quickly.  But, they stall and fight when paying out to someone else.  They may even contest the other party's claim if they think they can get away with it.

I would go through my insurance company to get the car fixed and let them get the money from the other party.  They are really good at that kind of stuff.  That is if you have full coverage.  If you are making the claim against the other insurance company directly then you are at a disadvantage.

Insurance varies State to State, but I've had State Farm since I was 16 years old and they've been great to work with.

We have had auto, home and commercial (rental) insurance with State Farm for 35 + years.  Never a problem.  Like many insurance companies, they are now using contract adjusters for many claims.

I had State Farm for over 40 years.  Auto, home, business, life, liability.  A high wind blew the roof of my commercial property last October.  I had a $60,000 check in my hand within 24 hours.

8 weeks later, State Farm cancelled my commercial insurance.  It did not make sense to me, act of god and they did not want to continue receiving a premium from me to make up for their payout.

I cancelled all my State Farm policies and move to Farm Bureau except term life.  Which is cheap and the biggest liability amount that they had/have with me.  If I or the wife ever collect on that, the policy will more than make up for all the premiums I have paid them.

Outside of my one good/bad experience, I was very happy with State Farm.

If you say that you have full coverage with your insurance company, you should contact them and let them handle the subrogation.  They are better at it than you.  Jurgen
