I was trying to squeeze an extra 2K miles out of a set of 70K mile tires on a Honda Civic. Well my wife paid the price for my stupidity as she spaced just for a second coming off an exit ramp and hit the brakes (no abs) and skidded into a car. Slightly dented our front end (didn't set off the air bags which was a surprise) and luckily the nice guy she hit let it go without any damage to his car. But if I hadn't been cheap and had those new tires she would have stopped just short of hitting that car. It is not worth it. If you are down that far a thumb tack could take out the tire. I agree with the false economy idea. Getting a few hundred more miles just because there is something left to ride on doesn't make sense.
